I got some shells for my hermit crabs to move into. They looked fine outside the water, and the vendor claimed they are not painted or anything of the like, but once they're in the water, there was a strip on one that looked almost metallic, it's reflective and shiny and silver in color. Is this something that can happen, or should I be concerned and try to remove it from the tank? And if so, how do I get the crab that moved into one of the shells out?

Can you post a pic? I’d remove the empty shells as a precaution while we figure this out so no more crabs move in. It’s possible to remove a hermit from the shell but difficult and stressful, better to try to entice him out or leave him be

I think it might actually just be the shell. Pictures posted below

Its possible it is the shell. Many bivalves and gastropods build very shiny silver shells, most typically its the inside of the shell that is silver in my opinion.

Yes, def the shell. I’ve seen silver or gold. Can be quite shiny like real metal but it’s not.

That's what I'm kind of beginning to think. I posted pictures above, and I'm wondering if the stripe I'm seeing isn't just a place where the outer shell flaked off a bit and revealed the shiny down beneath.

Exactly. If only it were real gold .

@Fishy65 @JGT @footgal Thank you guys I think I'm convinced it's okay. I'm just a little paranoid adding things into the tank, I'm sure you guys understand. Love my pistol/ywg pair, lawnmower blenny and clown. And more coming. Want to keep a great tank.
Better safe than sorry. That’s what R2R is here for
