sorry if this is the wrong place to ask but I just got back from UPS and Fedex to overnight some coral to someone in the next state over. I always heard that it would be around $50 or less. They wanted $140 from both places for my 12x12x12 box that couldn’t be more than a few pounds.

Is this because it’s the holidays or am I doing something wrong?

I’m sure the holidays has something to do with it. I know a lot of people stopped shipping

I found that out the other day too. Sold a nano skimmer and it was $23 to ship.

Walking into a UPS or FedEx store is not going to get the same shipping costs that you see people on here, where they can ship overnight for $50. The reason being is that most of us who can ship for this price, have a shipping account with the carrier or a small package division. Walking into a UPS or Fed ex store every day customer, that sounds about right for a box that large

Your also not going to get your 1030 commit time fir ups overnight right now due to holiday. All overnight is end of the day

Going to the UPS or FedEx or USPS website and doing a shipping label and pre-paying for shipping usually is cheaper.
Plus, that " couldn't be more than a few pounds " is also a warning.
I've had people ship overnight boxes to the local FedEx facility ( to me) to be held for pick and that saves a few bucks.
But you need to know that specific location.

Can you explain why that line is a warning? I was just pointing out that Im not shipping a box full of fish with a lot of water weight.

Use a site called shipnex.com to ship your stuff. Their cost usually is around $50 but doing the holidays it goes up closer to $60.

thank you for this recommendation! $44 to go through them.

It’s also the size of your box

Im using the cooler box that WWC sent me some corals in. I guess I need to create a smaller box with the styrofoam insulation from Home Depot. Any idea where I can get those nice little cube boxes?

I'm always surprised with actual weight vs. the guess I made.

I know FedEx have a default minimum weight for all sizes. So a 12x12x12 may have 2 pounds in there but FedEx will charge you for close to 10lbs. I know 7x7x7 defaults to 3 lbs so I always pay for 3 lbs or more if its more than 3 lbs.
