Ok my son and I are looking for our tank.
He is a Craigslistaholic. He must have sent me 50 pics of tanks. Anyway we are looking for a 100 to 150 gallon.
Are there tanks that we should stay away from? We plan on doing a reef tank. We will post pics of our progress as we go.
So any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Seems like an awesome father / son hobby!!

I currently have a small 29g, so I often find myself looking to upgrade. Mostly via Craigslist. ($700 on a new shiny tank vs. $150 on a dusty tank WITH stand).

My advice: ask them to fill it with water before you arrive, that way you know for sure it does not leak. Also, a stand that comes included with the tank will save you tons of trouble having to figure that out. Stand will have room on the bottom for a sump that you can set up, and the seller might even have a sump available.

Keep your eyes peeled, if you LOVE a posting, buy it. If not, no need to pull the trigger on something just because

look for a reef ready tank(ie drilled tank ) it will make life much easy'er !!!!!
i have had luck used tanks .good luck an hope you find what you are looking for

Going to see our first tank

Ok we have found a tank that we are going to look at this saturday. I dont think it is drilled for the reef overflow.
The person selling it doesn't know if it is tempered glass. I have researched on line, I know we cant drill tempered glass.
1st would be to find a manufacturer of tank then check with them, 2nd would be look for a sticker on the tank, last will be to use polarized sun glasses and they say you can see black lines when you tilt your head.
It is a 150 gallon tank with a stand. It doesn't leak. My question being what would be your thoughts about resealing the tank as I will be refinishing the stand too.
Thanks. I will post a pic if we decide to get it.

make sure you take a flashlight & shine it down the glass looking for scratches I drove 2 hours to get my 135 no it didn't leak yes all the seals were great etc but it was on covered porch & the scratches didn't show up got it home & it looks like someone used course sandpaper to clean it $350 (including diesel) for a tank I can't even set up

Thanks
