Has anyone ever used these acrylic boxes for a reef tank ATO? It seems like simply adding “reef” or “aquarium” to an item description raises the prices on the simplest of things. I’ve been contemplating getting something like this:

...and then running a few beads of silicone in the corners just in case. Any thoughts?

Those are $100 each, hold about 30 gallons and are only 1/4" thick. I don't think that's cheap and I'd be a bit worried about the ability of 1/4" holding even 30 gallons of water safely.

Look for a small aquarium. PetCo does Dollar -A-Gallon sales and a 40g glass aquarium would only cost $40.

Agree above 1/4” for 30 gallons is a bit thin, Also silicone will not add much support to acrylic, does not stick the same way it does to glass. This is why when you make a glass sump with acrylic baffles you sandwich the insert between 2 beads one of each side.

For large water reservoirs like this, i like potable water barrels. I. My mixing container is a 15 gallon one on a dolly so i can simply wheel back and forth to my rodi system.

You're certainly correct about the pricing thing! It's an ATO - if you're not picky use a slim trash can! I took one from my work - shhhhh don't tell my boss.

Haha my lips are sealed! For sure about the cost of things going up with the reef title. Screen net tops for instance are quite easy to make but are definitely pricey from common reef tank suppliers.

For my situation, part of the issue is that I need to fit the ATO reservoir within my stand in an area roughly 20x15x15. So a lot of the standard tank sizes won't work. A 15" cube might be perfect. Custom acrylic or glass sizes are certainly more expensive than sizes that are mass produced.

Sorry for making you turn your head but this is my sump, 2 20 longs connected with a union. I have that little off trashcan sitting right outside the tank with some airline tubing attached to a maxijet - nothing fancy. I keep a lid on both sumps, and my tank so my ATO goes off like maybe once every 2 weeks. It's super efficient thus I can use a littler reservoir. It's a 90 gal cube.
