Should glass panels touch on tank?

so should the glass panels touch each other on a glass tank? Or is it ok if they do not touch but there is silicon filling in the gap (gap is 1/16" to 1/8" top to bottom of the entire seam)?

This is a small 3 gallon rimless tank.
 
There are two schools of thought on this. They can and can't. Some build tank with glass touching and some leave a gap for silicone to go through. I have booth kinds and can't tell any difference.

Apparently this manufacturer can't decide which way to do it, some seams the glass is flush, others have gaps :eek:
