Should I add a pistol shrimp and goby?

I want to add a pistol shrimp and a goby.

I have a lot of fish, can they pistol shrim kill any? I have 1 cleaner shrimp.

Do they make a lot of noise?

Anything I should know that could be a concern.

I've got a Randall's and he never messed with my fish, but I do wonder if he killed my Fire Shrimp because one day he was just missing. I am running a 12 gal Nano however with 2 clowns, a yellow watchmen, and him. Basically the clowns never leave to go towards the sand bed and he never ventures further than a few inches outside of his tunnels. Not saying he wouldn't mess with something if it was closer to his territory, but as of yet there has been really no opportunity. He's getting ready to go into a 45 Gallon with a lot more space (and fish) so we'll see what happens.

As far as noise, I occasionally can hear him clicking at the rock or glass, but it's not often. The only thing that scares me is that it's the same sound that happens if glass were to ever crack.

I'd worry more about the pistol shrimp being eaten than it killing something as they are almost entirely blind. So, if you'd like a pair, I say go for it

The only issue i have with mine is he wants to steal any small frag that's on the sandbed. So i have to make sure I really glue frags down or they end up under the rocks never to be seen again.

In my 10 gallon my Randall’s pistol killed my cleaner shrimp. In a 120 gallon I really doubt the cleaner shrimp will get close enough to get shot. A randals pistol seems super unlikely to kill any fish unless you have the very tiny gobies like eviota.

a pistol shrimp and goby Pair is in my opinion truly amazing to watch. The goby and shrimp will go on little walks together close to the burrow, the shrimp will sometimes clean the goby. It’s just a really cool relationship and the goby will be very cute as it yawns to scare other fish away.I especially love Stonogobiops genus gobies like the hi fin and yasha - this genus has a swim bladder so they spend more time hovering over the sand outside the burrow than other genuses but I know others love their randals goby or their “ordinary” yellow watchman so you can’t really go wrong.

Randall Pistol Shrimp are small, peaceful and never kill anything. Anything come near the burrow, he just darts into it. Pair him with smaller shrimp gobies like the Randall, Dracula, or Yasha shrimp gobies. I would worry other animal, fish and shrimp kill him if he does not have the protection of a shrimp goby, rather than the other way around.

Thanks for everyone’s comments, this is a red banded pistol shrimp.

I was just worried if it’s super loud it scared my fish constantly.

The pistol shrimp is blind and will use the goby as its eyes. It will focus on working on the burrow while keeping an antennae on the goby. When the goby sees danger and darts back into the well maintained burrow (thanks to the shrimp) the pistol shrimp will know to take refuge in the burrow.

The goby in return will share its food with the shrimp.

I think since the shrimp doesn't focus on hunting when it's paired with a goby is why you don't read posts about it killing tank mates. But that just my hypothesis.

Do the gobies get sand all over the rockwork or pretty much stay to the sandbed

Shrimp gobies do not mess with the sand. It is the pistol shrimp that build the tunnel.

You’ll enjoy them I have a yellow watch & pistol shrimp. You can hear snapping but it’s nothing that will annoy you. Just make sure to have a deep sand bed! & hope you don’t mind the cloudy tank time to time!

Just added a yellow watchman and pistol shrimp today. Hopefully they'll pair up soon. How long did it take yours?

I ordered my new goby and pistol shrimp from divers den from live aquaria. My first one and I was excited!

The goby did not make it, the shrimp did but he’s 1/4” big.

super small, he probably won’t make it alone. Paid $70. I called LA they toled me to email LA but no response.

Esther I bought mine together from LFS they were already paired. But it won’t take long. you’ll know when the goby is perched up in the opening of the “cave”. they are really cool to watch also you want to add small rocks shells or crushed coral they use this to keep the opening from collapsing.

Hopefully you can find a new goby. I have that same pistol shrimp paired with a yellow watchman. They moved to the back side of my rock work so I don't see them much anymore. The shrimp will move allot of sand around so I try not to keep any coral low down. The shrimp will also scavenge any thing that's not glued down that it's able to carry back to its burrow. The only time I hear my shrimp is at night after lights out. It's a small popping noise that doesn't bother me at all.
