Good morning,

I am wondering if I should add more rock. I don't necessarily like a ton of rock in a tank and the fish I plan to get love swimming. However I feel like it might need more but I'm 50/50 on it.

Penny for your thoughts?

At the very least I am thinking of strengthening the left side as it seems a little lack luster.

Would use it to add more caves perhaps

I have plenty of rock still to do this.

Sorry for the glare 20231125_083918.jpg

I would add more. Fish like to swim but they also need places to hide. Every fish I have in my tanks except one has a certain place that is theirs in the rock work. My Naso just hangs in a corner at night but she doesn't really seem to rest all night like the others. My most recent build started off a bit minimalistic but I have gradually been adding more rock to the bottom creating places for the fish to hide.

I think it needs more, but I like a lot. If you don't it's your tank :) Just make sure you have enough for filtering, about a pound per gallon think is the going consensus. Others more knowledgeable can chime in.

One thing, if you plan on coral, you want to have places to mount them. IE, horizontal spots at various heights off the sand.

I like it, looks to have plenty of caves.

You can always add more later, as you add corals you will know if it’s working for you, then you will be able to place the rock exactly where you need it.

I do plan to add corals and was trying to consider growth I think I will add more. No fish in here yet trying to finish the plumbing at the moment

So I moved that half tree piece behind the large structure on the right and moved the island more to the right

I think if I sculpt another Medium piece in the gap it will look more full

And im hoping the coral will complete the rule of thirds I did have it taped out on the original scape before this addition

I think you could use more, however the answer depends on whether you're planning a fish only tank - or adding corals. If you're adding corals - they will grow to fill the empty space. Do what you like.

Yes I will be adding corals. I'm going to focus filling some gaps and making more crevices. And fish coverage spots

Looks better maybe a few more rocks. It's gonna look beautiful I bet, your attention to detail will pay off!

I glued this together two separate pieces I'm gonna mortar it in some places and try and fit it in that empty spot. I think it will look even better.

I have never made a scape this big before

There needs to be at least 2-3 times the rock. It’s best to stack the rock with lots of places for your fish to hide and escape. I like caves, and stacked rock that’s taller for fish to swim in and around, with some varying height. This gives the tank some dimension and adds some creativity as well.

Are you planning a mixed reef, SPS reef, LPS reef, softy reef? Do you plan on stocking with smaller or larger fish? This will help determine your aquacaping and amount of rock.

Mixed and biggest fish will be yellow tang bristletooth and copperband

I wouldn't remove caves on purpose. I try to make as many as possible.
