Should I add sand to my refugium

Hi
I recently set up a 75 gallon reef tank. It has been cycling for a month now. I have half inch sand substrate, and about
50 pounds of live rock in the tank. I am using the aqueon proflex 2 sump. In the refugium section I added 2 blocks of Marine pure and some chaeto. Is the marine pure good enough or should I add sand in my refugium section along with the marine pure? There is a bit of a cyano outbreak but I believe it will go away after cycling.

Blocks will be fine, loads of surface area. Sand can be a pain to deal with in a sump.

I did something like that to in my tank.. just added algae from the agaebarn at thanksgiving
