In short, yes. Otherwise is will clog. As a bio-media it shouldn't matter a lot because in theory the bacteria would handle everything. That said, with a pump pushing it, it can clog.

I would honestly remove the sponges and just let the detritus flow through as well.

Why do you have that media?

Since my display is shallow and without much rock, I added the media (Aquaforest Life Bio Fil) to the reactor to pass water inside because I lack space in my sump.

Is it useless ?

So is it useless ? I hope its a yes so I can make more space for dosing containers lol.
But I hope it won't have a big impact on the reef if I remove it.
