Hello all,
I am looking at the tank and wondering....is there something I should be doing or should I go back to reading my book?
History:
I ordered my tank several months ago but it was delayed with the COVID mess.
I put 55lbs of dry rock in a trashcan with RODI water, a heater and powerhead. I started with Dr. Tims One and Only. Three weeks and I still had some ammonia and nitrites, and nitrates were high.
The 120g tank arrived, I moved the rock to the aquarium, new sand, saltwater (low salinity 28ppm) while RODI was making more.
With the new sand, tank, sump, other hardware and saltwater, the numbers all went low (.25 ammonia, 0 everything else), so I dosed more ammonia and added the rest of the Dr. Tims. Three days later, we left to visit grandkids, and the tank was left with heater, powerhead but not return pump/sump.
Three weeks later, added 15lbs dry rock (given it over the holidays), got the same numbers as before .25 ammonia, 0 everything else).
The LFS suggested I start over
Added a bottle of Fritz 9
Started adding 60ml of Stability daily.
Day 4 - Ammonia is .50, NI is 2.0, Nitrate is 5.0

Yesterday started seeing green on the dry rock.
Today i have bright green algae on a few of the rocks (1/8" high).

I had run the lights a few days earlier on, has been off for the past few days.

I was surprised to see algae with the lights being off and no real source for food for the algae.

I am inclined to just leave the tank alone and keep testing the numbers.
But then I wondered, should I look at putting a few hermit crabs or snails in just to keep the algae in check.

What say's the experts?

I am using API tests
API test kits have failed many due to false readings, Invest in hanna or Salifert kits. Assuming your nitrate and Phosphate may be becoming elevated, add a small pouch of Chemipure elite to keep both in check.
For the green- Reduce white light intensity for 7-10 days and add the following snails:

3 turbo
3 astrea
3 trochus
3 nassarius
3 cerith
6 blue leg hermits

theyll help keep the algae in check.

Are you using RODI water or tap water from the faucet ?
Is tank at or near a window?

thank you very much.
I question the tests at my LFS but they pointed out that they use the API tests for all water tests they do at the store. I will see tomorrow if the other LFS not too far away has the Salifert kit and the snails. I have not tested Phosphate yet.
I have turned the lights off for the last three days. There is nothing in the tank but rock and sand so nothing really needs the lights. The tank is along a wall that has a window in it, about 24" off to the side.
I am using RODI that is testing 0 TDS. I am using Instant Ocean Reef Crystals for salt but am planning to change to Fritz salt when this initial bucket is used.

I suspected window. UV is very strong and with shades, the indirect lights will contribute to algae.
Get some black construction paper at walmart school section (92 cents) and blocked the side of tank facing window, You will see reduction of algae further.

LFS tested the water today and found the ammonia is down to .25, the nitrite is 1.0 and nitrate is 10. They recommended Stability for the next two weeks.

Two more days...same testing values Ammonia is .25, and nitrite is 1.0.
One LFS store recommended a 20% water change, the other LFS advised do not do a water change or the cycle will need to be restarted.
