Currently cycling my fusion 30. I'm using Red Sea reef mature pro kit, it comes with a bottle of KH coralline grow. My alk is 7.7, it advises I dose regularly to get to 8.4. I don't want to start out dosing, if I don't have to. I do plan on growing lps.

That's just a basic supplement to help boost the system early on. I would wait a month or so after you're done cycling then use it. It's probably going to boost your ALK and CA, maybe MG, just like the product Purple Up. There's no harm in using it, but right now it's basically pointless to do so. And yes, you don't need to worry about dosing this early on in the game, that comes later... IMO.

I'm surprised your alk is that low to be honest. Your water changes should be keeping you afloat for a while until your tank starts requiring more. Have you tested a batch of fresh saltwater?

I agree, what kind of salt do you use?

I've not tested it yet, and I'm using HW Reefer mix. I haven't done a water change yet, only added a few cups of salt while trying to dial in my salinity.

If your salinity is off, everything else will be off. What's your salinity?

Best thing I've ever done for dosing, was to set it all up, start dosing a very minimal amount (like a drop a day) and then you'll be all set. I also believe once I do this, corals sense the levels stay stable, and start increasing their metabolism. (vs they sense a decline so they probably flip to survival and conservation) Algae does it, as do many creatures.

With a refractometer. Usually will calibrate before I test even.

You shouldn't need to add salt once you have the level set unless you are removing water from the tank.

Yeah I know. I overdosed ammonia, so I did a partial water change. Also when messing with my Tunze 3155, it kept dumping RODI

are you sure that's not pH instead of alk?

As far as dosing is concerned read up and try the diy 2 part from dr randy holmes Farley in the chemistry section.

Yeah. I have a PH monitor on my RKL, and for alk I'm using a Hannah checker.

the explains the precision. I used to drop type tests where each drop is 1 dkh

my .02
