So I have 2 clownfish and I would love for them to host a BTA. My issue is that we are planning to move in roughly 2 years (maybe 3). It is a 3500 border-crossing move. I am not sure I will be able to take all of my fish (I have 5 tanks- 4 fresh). I'm exploring options, but I suspect I will probably sell off a good portion of my stock and only keep a few (my angels, my pleco, and my puffer for fresh and my clowns+nem and rock + corals for salt). If it were you, would you get a nem now (well, in a couple months, I've had my tank set up since January), and deal with selling or moving the nem later, or would you skip it until after the move?

I would definitely just buy one now, two years is still a long time and you can easily sell it to someone for a good price if it’s healthy. Maybe even sell it to a LFS if you have any near by that do that. As long as your tank is doing well, I would go for it and buy one, but that’s just me

I added a nem (didnt know I was moving in 2 months) and it pulled through fine. I had it in a 5 gallon bucket because it was attached to rock, I had to insulate the bucket. I only moved 20 miles and my nem is still trying to bounce back it's been 2 weeks. It's super stressful on them so if you have a nice insulated way to do it, it could be okay but I would wait so there is minimal risk

My thought is to take the fish I want to keep to a LFS and have them "babysit" my fish for 30-60 days while we complete the international move. I would take the live rock and coral in aerated coolers and hope they survived the 5 day drive. Then when the tanks have been set up for 3-6 weeks, have the LFS ship the fish/nem to me.

So the big thing with the drive is that the corals dont need the water too oxygenated they need nutrience and light, the light provides oxygen and some nutrience for them. 5 days would be very scary because that's why we do overnight shipping on coral because with every day the chance of success lowers. The most I've ever been able to push it is 2 nights. I would recomend spending the money in overnight air shipping them to your location (of course depending on the value of the coral)

Thank you! That is very helpful. So really I would only need to personally move any LR that didn't have coral on it. I would need to ship fish and the coral. Might be easier to frag the coral I want to keep and sell off the rest, and take my LR and have the LFS ship the frags... hmm.
