older than the example tanks and at one gallon with top shelf sps, the highest ion draw if we factor age/weight/variation of stony corals to water volume. Its the stress test of all the must-dose claims. just to show full options, no testing is powerful.
The key here isn't whether you have to test or not.

Decide if you want to test, then replicate those methods. if you want to not test, replicate those. nearly any hardfast rule in reefing has examples of being broken successfully online, and while anyone can hack together an item/8 yrs for maritza is no fluke Ive watched them build this vase start to finish yep its a good one for ion draw assessment in high end micro systems.
I personally used to break both rules. I dosed C balance a and b by guesstimates for years, without testing, based on how my coralline and polyps responded but never a pinpoint test. The only reason I stopped was after Maritza's 3rd yr on instant ocean only they were getting the same growth without buying the extra stuff. there was no calamity, and the one gallon systems were already supposed to be unstable they can't tolerate ion imbalances.
we can make any sps grow in a goldfish bowl with just feeding and instant ocean only partial water changes. anyone who sets one up/same outcome we can see on nano-reef.com picos forum, the majority are non dosers. they're feeders + water changers.
nano reefs (bigger than pico) do start to get into precision dosing just to lessen access work needs/enjoy tinkering etc no harm there. if someone wants to dose a reef of any size thats fun too, its neat we really have a choice.
