Should i convert my hob to a refugium?

So I am using my aquaclear 70 on my 20g as mechanical filtration only. I dont take the sponge out ever to clean it because I've never had a rise in nitrate or phosphate. Would it be more worthwhile to turn this filter into a hob refugium? Pods do reproduce well in my filter media but I feel they would do better in a real refugium with chaeto

I even turned off my skimmer so removing the hob would take away all forms of nutrience export.. however I feel with my bio load water changed is perfect
