should i do a water change or leave as is?

i mix my own i use instant ocean aquarium salt the purple and white one i dont believe it's the reef one. i also use i believe a 3 stage ro/di unit it is barely used and no i never tested the ro/di water i rarely use it thats why i used to just use tap water. my parents are really anal about running the ro/di unit because the waste water -.-" the stores here dont carry pre mixed water and i never bought ro/di water from them.

I would test your RODI water on the TDS.

id return it and say its faulty. its pretty well junk is saltwater.
idk if it is faulty because my tank before i cleaned it up a little had bad algae bloom which i read was due to nitrates i mean everything from the walls to rocks covered then again i don't know much about parameters in general and im sure it could be faulty the strips i used before were for sure but these were the liquid ones i would assume they hold way better

looked up tds looks like i wont be able to test my water untile i get one. not sure when that will be though

Do you have a petco nearby? Might be easier to just got buy the water. Zero chance of messing it up. Afterwards you can work on getting everything right like others have said.

yea but ours isn't so into fishes they supply little aquarium supplies. they also don't sell pre mixed only ro/di i think and not in bulk. i also live in hawaii so it is expensive the test kit alone cost me $50 when i could of bought it online for $25 but they dont ship it to hawaii via air since its liquid im guessing

... Walk to the ocean... get water. Ocean Water is free there!!! Lol but really you can do that, people do that. They just add a few supplements to make them better for aquariums.

You can catch fish and take them home... Free. Catching your own aquarium fish would be amazing, and you can do that. Who needs a pet store... you have an ocean and a reef.

yes I know people do that but I honestly don't trust the ocean water here. lots of homeless people at the beaches, molasses spill a few years ago, tons of trash in the water like plastic bags, cigarette butts, old nets, etc.. ontop of that I don't really have anything to get the water with for my tank so it is more of a hassle in my case versus hooking up my ro/di filter and running it and mixing if needed.

I just did about a 50% water change and did a water test again got mostly the same results except for the nitrate it seemed to get to a darker red color which I labeled at 160ppm. not sure if It was because I may have added more drops or what but it definetly was at 80ppm mark yesterday today it was a deep red. will have to check the salinity but I don't think it will go down by much my ro/di water was pre mixed at 1.020 and I just added fresh ro/di water to it

can you do that nitrate test one more time? Just to double check?

Go to the LFS and buy seachem prime, or other emergency saltwater nitrate detox, get the smallest bottle the stuff last forever. Take smart phone incase staff is clueless, but they should know what your talking about.

Also get http://www.apifishcare.com/pdf/Testing_Chart_1_16_14-1.pdf

These strips are inaccurate as heck... BUT they will tell you if API test is bad. Plus a thing of 25 strips is only $5-8 and they are sold EVERYWHERE.

I think your API nitrate test was done wrong, or is bad or expired for some reason. That high of nitrates you would expect to see some nitrite or ammonia along with it. But it is so high that precautions should be taken. Hence what I said to buy.

You can also go to a LFS and have them test your water. Most do it free of charge.

looks the same to me little lighter but still looks about 160ppm

Take a 5-10oz water sample to LFS and get it tested. That is WAY too high if it is correct.

Did you use RODI water for water change? If not get tap water from the same source and test nitrates and post the results. also use ANY bottled water and test it to compare. It can be a cheap 1 dollar bottle, anything will work. Post those results also.

If those sources BOTH show high nitrates, you got a bad test kit. Take it back to the LFS and demand a refund. Let them test it to confirm it is bad.

The ONLY thing that makes any sense with extreme nitrate and no ammonia or nitrite is bad test kit, or tap water is extremely high nitrate.

yes I used ro/di to do water change only thing I can think of that could have really screwed it up is that sometimes my dad/grandpa puts he waste water line from the ro/di filter into the ro/di only trash can -.-" it doesn't seem to be the case though I mean by now I would have had a diatom bloom in my tank but it seems to be fine. here is the source of the water I am getting I did the nitrate test on it only. it looks to be 0ppm

@Humblefish @redfishbluefish

I think you need to dose a nitrate detoxifier immediately. It will buy you time to do at least 2 more 50% water changes. Or a series of 25% changes. Does anyone disagree?

Also make sure to test the saltwater mix before you put it in the tank for nitrates just in case.

yea it is looking that way. btw what other brands might there be of seachem prime? I'm not sure if the stores here carry that brand or like what other names can I find it under? or should I just look for something that reduced nitrates

I don't know all the brands. Amquel is another popular choice. But every major brand seems to make one... even API. Though I don't know the exact names. Long term solutions I would order both at the local petco as they CAN order in any product they sell online. I would also start using Purigen in canister filter, 100ml pre-bagged is about the right size for that canister filter.

Is this a reef or fish only? If your nitrates were 160, I would think even hardy xenia/mushrooms would melt in that. Fish aren't really affected by high nitrates until it gets much higher than what you're reading.

it's a fish only. yea the pet stores here should carry seachem but sometimes i don't see much of a selection

Last time, I got "rodi" water from petco the TDS was over 200, dumped it went to wally world and filled up from the Culligans machine TDS was still 10 but better than petco.. Have an RODI unit now.

OP, you can use the waste water for laundry as well watering the yard. Have seen many setups where people keep a waste water bin next to the washer and pump water into the washing machine when they start a load.
