I am moving next week and am trying to decide if I should go ahead and get a new tank and stand or keep what I've got -

what I have now is a standard 180 gal on normal height stand. It is not drilled so I use an external overflow and since the stand is short I have my sump positioned next to it in an old stand that I "adjusted" the height on and put a top on it. The system works fine as is, but the tank I bought used and has some decent sized scratches on the front panel.

I've been looking at either a new marineland 180 with corner overflows (or get a standard and have it drilled) or one from Planet Aquariums drilled in the back panel with their overflow. Either would have a higher stand to allow more room for equip and to raise the viewing height.

What do you all think - is a drilled tank and taller stand that much of an improvement??

If you are a short person a taller stand could have its own problems. If you get a tank that is drilled consider the space the overflows need. Takes away from rock work. A new tank is always an adventure. If I were moving I might have already bought and set up the tank before the rest of the move. Priorities right? :). My tank is drilled and tall. Pail at times, but I like it!

Yes, for sure.
Everything it'll be easier and better looking.
Get a good stand where you can have the sump, RODI container and space for all the stuff.
As per the tank hight I prefer lower tanks so I can get good light penetration.

I wouldnt, unless your doubling the size!
