So I have used RSCP salt since I've started any tank. But since my reef tank isn't very demanding in nutrients since there are a few corals but not any that really eat up all the nutrients I was thinking of switching to instant ocean or reef crystals. As I get like a white haze in the top of my water and almost positive it's excessive nutrient and not a algae bloom or bacteria bloom. So if I switch to something like instant ocean with a little less nutrients and dose here and there will I be okay? Plus it's so cheap it leave more room in the budget to buy more corals!!! Anyways any tips or comments on this. And how fast can i switch to it. I usually do 10gal water changes a month on this particular tank. What do you guys think?

I use Reef Crystals and have been quite happy with it. It is more readily available in my area if I forget to order online (cheaper), and it dissolves totally clear for me. I shake the bucket really well before preparing my saltwater to get everything in the salt distributed around as best as I can, and I mix my water the night before I do my weekly water changes. Anything done quickly in this hobby never ends well, so I would just do your regular water changes with the new salt you want to use, but keep an eye on parameters and such. Good luck!

White haze is calcuim that has not dissolved RScp needs to be mixed for 2 hours only.
Most salt has a proper way to mix and it must be done in a order that most manufacturers set out.
I would use the blue bucket on a low coral tank as you do not need the extra dKH with a low population of corals.

I recently switched from the most expensive salts, Tropic Marin Pro and ESV to the cheapest, Instant Ocean. I have noticed 0 negative changes in the tank after using 100g of IO and they system keeps getting better and better, so I am pleased with the switch.

there is an online poster called maritza the reef vase that keeps us updated of pico reef changes on their tank of the month 26 mo system, they are on IO only w no dosing for that long, IO has roughly a 20+ yr track record cant go wrong

I have been using seachem reef salt for years now and have been very happy with the results. and I run a lot of sps. and only have to dose small amounts. I would think it would do great on a low demand system on its own.
just make sure you swap over a little at a time. slowly start adding what ever salt you are going to change over to into your water change water. the slower you swap over the less issues you will have. good luck let us know what you end up going to and why.

Will be going to my LFS in about a hour. So prob gonna pick up a bag of instant ocean that makes 50 gallons. Then do a 5 gal water change every 2 weeks rather than my normal 10 a month so it's a slower transition. And figure since many people do run their tanks on this with very little to no dosing I think I'm going to be fine. Plus it's cheap haha can't beat that. Anyone think the transition is to fast or I'll be fine?

what i do is rougher

on my 9 yr old mixed system i only do 100% water changes because its small, using lfs premade water.

they switch between 5 brands at any time based on cost, so I might go to two totally different mixes instantly across only two water changes lol. tanks r tough

I did the opposite switch a few months back from reef crystals to RSP. I changed it over doing small water changes every week with no ill effects. RSP is good for tanks that require a high demand of Calcium, alk, and mag. I still have to dose using it. If your tank doesn't require excessive amounts of these it's worth the switch and will put some more money in your pocket for coal
