I have a Red Sea 170 that I’ve had for 2 years now. I had a clown, blue damsel, dwarf lion, goby, and anemone. I came home about 2 weeks ago to a total wreck of a tank with the only survivors being a clown and goby. Since then I’ve just felt bored with the tank. I don’t look forward to working on it, I feel like I’m in a lull and don’t know what to do. I have an offer for it for $1500 and don’t know if I should dump it or keep it for a bit. Does anyone have experience with this? I just feel bored and uninterested and don’t know what to do.

Many years ago, I had a 120 gallon crack while I was at work. Came home to a room full of water, dead fish and one fish that survived but later died. It was sad and frustrating. I gave up but recently decided to get back in the game. If you really have no desire to keep an aquarium then you probably shouldn’t. If you will ignore them, then it means it isn’t for you. You could perhaps wait a year or two and jump back in. Good luck!

We ALL have had our share of experiences good, bad or whatever... If you enjoy your tank, fish and inhabitants, keep it and take this as a learning lesson. This is nature we're trying to replicate. Nature isn't always fair or easy and we're only human. On the other hand if tank maintenance, feeding and caring for the above is overwhelming, maybe you should take some time off. Trust me many members here have had their fair share of ups and downs and many get out and many move on to bigger and better. It's not mine or anyone else's opinion to tell you what to do, it is your decision.

This Is reefing. The challenge, the triumphs and the pitfalls.
The big ones can hit you like a baseball bat and you have to understand, it happens.

Don't sell your equipment. You'll never get what you put into it.
Your experiencing a bout of depression from your loss. All that time and energy invested was lost suddenly like a death and there needs to be time for mourning.

Instead, take a break. If you need a few months or a few years, just get away from reefing.

When you start to put that day behind, your interest in the hobby will come back. If it doesn't, then sell. But that's rare. Most reefers do this because of the difficulties that challenge them.
If it were easy, most of us wouldn't be doing it.

Good luck either way, and I feel for you. More than I'd like to to be honest.

If you have an offer for $1500 cash and get no current enjoyment from the tank and don’t plan on setting it up again inside 1-2 years then sell it ASAP before that offer is gone. I got out of the hobby a while ago and kept all my previous equipment but once I got back into reefing eveything was outdated and had to upgrade most things anyways and couldn’t give my dated equipment away. Lost more money holding on to it.

+1

Sell it. If you get back in after a few years just keep eye out for used equipment, planning and collecting equipment for a build is part of the fun anyway for me. I have way too much 'fish stuff' in my basement the way it is now, will do a big spring cleaning and toss a lot of things that I should have sold when I could.

Never let a tank kick you in the butt.

I have had two crashes due to leaks and it was my opportunity to repack and rescape my tank with a vengeance and I came back each time stronger than ever
