Have been going around 7 months now and have had ups and downs with corals and fish. Fish being a a ich outbreak. Corals are doing great for a bit than just hit the stop button on me. I have a few from the beginning and only lost two out of around twenty but they just seem unhappy. Just got over a cyno treatment and have skimmer back in check lol.
Anyway am I wasting my time without a sump or should I keep on.
I have two cannister filters running, a sponge filter with bio balls and a aquamaxx 1.5 skimmer. Corals are mainly lps and softes and a few low end sps. Livestock is two clowns sixline and alage blenny
Parameters are all in check

I have a buddy down the street from me running a 220 Gallon reef with two lion fish about 6 tangs, an angle fish, a clown, two eels, and a groper on a FX6. But he does have two hang on the rim Skimmers and two power heads.

He has had a ruff time at times to. But his problems seem to be mostly self induced from buying a fish and not QTing it and just throwing it in and then he has an out break of Ick or velvet. The worse issue he has had is just about 4 weeks ago him and his women got sick and they both ignored the tanked other then the daily feeding for the fish and most of the corals sucked out the nutrients and 90% of the corals ended up dead.

Actually now that i think about it, he has 4 salt tanks and not a single one has a sump on it. I think his QT has a HOB filter.

So it can be done with a canister.

Don't worry i am jumping on the salt wagon too but i am coming from freshwater...I expect that i am going to get ick or velvet in on one of the fish.

Definitely qt fish. I learned the hard way about that. I was putting fish from the ocean in to think it would be nice to have somewhat of a natural tank for my area but it went horribly wrong. So Definitely qt.
