I just noticed my bottle of Phytofeast appears very brown. Does that mean its dead? If so how do I keep another bottle from dying? I have a lot of filterfeeders which need live phyto, so if its dead I'll need to buy more.

Yeah it's probably dead, it should be a dark green color, you could always ask for a refund if this is a new bottle.
I've had it for a about 6 months. I'm told just to shake it every so often, and leave the bottle open. Is there a way to preserve it or are they supposed to just die?

They need food , light, and just enough flow to keep them from falling to the bottom. See batch of live phyto below - my girls refer to it as “hulk” goo…

Ideally you use it before they die, I keep mine in the fridge door where it gets light and gets shaken every time someone opens the fridge. It's lasted me from July to now (I only dose 5ml, 2x a week).

Food you say, do you mean like fertilizer? And when you mention flow, does this imply I should grow phyto in a tank? It's a surprise to me, but I wouldn’t mind giving it a go :thinking-face:

Yes most people use f2.
Flow - its just an air line to the bottom of the container - else they drift down and crush themselves. You can grow it in a 2 liter bottle in a sunlit window (i used to..)

@Fenral is talking about culturing phyto. Phytofeast and similar products are the products of a phyto culture. Buying those products is a little different than a phyto culture. Phytofeast has multiple species of phyto that would out compete each other in a culture, its meant to be kept in the fridge to keep it in "stasis" to prolong its life under improper conditions. Hopefully that made sense! :)

Yes - my starter culture was from algaebarn - originally slated to be “food” so far i have been able to keep the culture going without crashing it for a few months. Most grow a mono culture though - in my case it really is random green goo :)

What is the best buy date on the bottle? Do you store it in the fridge?

I keep the bottle closed, don't think it should be stored open. Where did you get that storage information from?

I keep it in the refrigerator, and an employee at my LFS said to leave it open.

Lfs advice strikes again! Phyto is food for a lot of things - read random bacteria showing up for lunch. Leaving it open probably hastened its die off.
