Hello all,

I have been looking around at other members tanks and they always look really nice and clean. The glass has usually no algae on them. Am I doing something wrong if I constantly have green algae on my glass? I have to scrub them almost daily to keep them semi clean.

Parameters are seemingly good.

8.0-8.2 PH
and 0 for nitrate, nitrite and ammonia levels.

Could be im over feeding? I usually cut the mysis cubes in half and give one of those a day.

Id love to have a cleaner tank :)

Mine usually needs a slight scrub sometimes every other day. My prams are similar. Just chalk it up to tank maintnence and lights on to much.

IMO no you should not have to scrape algae off your glass every day. Its possible the reason your nitrate level is reading 0 is because the algae is eating it up.
Any chance your tank is near a window? In what ways are you removing excess nutrients? What kind of filtration are you using?

My tank is about 15 feet from the nearest window.

For filtration I just have LR and I also use chemi pure in the back of my tank (rear section on the jbj nano cube).

I have a bunch of bristle worms too.

Is half a cube of food too much for the little bit I have in my tank?

How old is the tank?

I noticed as my tank ages the less maintenance I have to do on the glass.

I have the same problem. Parameters check out fine. I was told that I have coralline algae growing but now I have my doubts it looks like red slime. Anyway to get rid of it? I do my water changes weekly

My take is 6 months old.

Another thing I noticed is as of late I started getting neon green in my sand bed. Not sure what it means. I have looked on the forums and I read a few different things but not sure which is what mine is.

I go to all these pet shops and see the clean glass and really clean tanks and it just makes me wonder if im not cleaning enough or its something else. Im only using the pad scraper and a really old magnetic one. Im going to get a blade scraper soon.

It is possible that your over feeding. Half a cube for how many fish? What type of food?
No matter what we do there will always be phosphates in fish food. The use of Chemipure Elite would be better as it contains GFO, which absorbs PO4.
Algae needs 2 things to thrive. Light & Nutrients. Take one away and it will die. In our tanks we take away excess nutrients by way of filtration, either mechanical, chemical or biological. Choose which one is best for you and your tank and stick with it.

I have two clowns and a damsel.

My lawnmower blenny eats a lot of the food too.

A little green on the glass is no big deal. It is a sign your needing to change something in regards to feeding, filtration, or flow. I simple mag scrubber will keep it nice and clean. Some older tanks have the purple coraline growing on the sides and back but I'm a scrapper and dont like it so I keep my glass clean.

As for red slime algae you can get simple and easy additive to clean this up that doesn't hurt your tank, fish, or corals. I had a red slime outbreak and treated the water for three days and it was gone. I had to do big water changes to get out the dead stuff but no worries there. I havent had an issue since and that was a year ago.
