Pvc primer and cement. You can get clear primer which I recommend because the purple stuff is ugly and goes everywhere

you don't need pvc primer for aquarium applications which are not high pressure. save yourself the hassle and time. red can (oatey) pvc cement dries clear for a pro clean job.

I rarely disagree but primer is needed. In order to get the best bond possible the pipe needs to be clean, that's what primer does. Primer does come in clear also so there that option. Ordinary house plumbing is required for the primer/solvent combo and is actually under far less stress than your aquarium plumbing, yes I said far less. Under tank plumbing is subject to heat, vibrations, light, and let's not forget saltwater. Typical house plumbing only sees water once per hour and not very much of it. Build your tanks plumbing with the intent on it lasting forever and you'll thank yourself later.

Agree with using primer - the clear stuff. The purple only shows inspectors that the primer was used, as per code. The purple really looks messy on aquarium plumbing. I have always used primer (30+ years).

Even if you use primer, you dont need to use the purple, just get the clear.
Second, just prime an inch or so of the pipe, so the purple wont show.

Why can't everyone in my day to day life be passionate reefers like all ya'll? I tell everyone I am a Reef tank junkie hoping to find someone like me - 10+ years in the hobby and still do not find anyone.. Thank god for R2R and seeing all the amazing tanks and sumps.. i know what you thinking b/c I am ordering blue pvc to match my blue and white sump =)
