Is there any particular species of angler that is recommended for someone looking to keep them? From what i gather painted or warty seem to be best?
I wouldn't want an 8 or 9 inch giant angler. All your other fish would be on the menuIs there any particular species of angler that is recommended for someone looking to keep them? From what i gather painted or warty seem to be best?
I was thinking of doing a species only tank for either a painted or warty with nps and lps with a separate tank plumbed in as a display refugium to try keep the nutrients down.I wouldn't want an 8 or 9 inch giant angler. All your other fish would be on the menu
Hey, anyone here know exactly what species the "assorted angler" on Live Aquaria happens to be? In the pictures, all of the fish are painted frogs (with one potentially being a warty) and I would guess those would be the most likely candidates. I know they never sell Commerson's out of DD, and the sargassum & striated don't match the description given or the pictures. I know that the site says the max is 9" but I heavily doubt I would get a commerson's through it. I just want to know if I'm safe buying one for a lagoon 24g (2'x2'x16") that has been ripening for two years.
Thanks in advance! If anyone has directly ordered this fish then your input would be awesome.
Hey, thanks! Yes I am aware that I will be sent a slugger, actually the point of choosing that over WYSIWYG or colored is so I would have a chance at watching it change colors (The tank it will go in to is about to get a new shipment of sponges, red and pink). Currently WYSIWYS is also too expensive (so is getting a special LFS order) and to be honest it might be fun not knowing what I'll get lolIt will be an antennarius species and really is a mixed bag of not so popular and mostly unattractive anglers. It could end up being a commersons, these are fish that they also couldn't 100% id. Take a look at the website below and you'll see why, small commersons and painted look very similar. These are usually brown, grey, dull and drab, off color muddy white, greenish. Now if you have a colorful reef they may color up, but for an angler I think it is best to find a wysiwyg like on dd, or just a staight up warty, sargassum, striated, or even one of the colored anglers, which will usually be a painted. Even if you get one of the colored ones or others that I mentioned without color in your tank for them imprint, they will imprint on the rocks color and become somewhat drab.
I don't know if this website has been posted here before:

I know this post is really old but is this a baby or a pygmy? I know this was asked by another member but I couldn't find a reply.I think it is a baby but I am not entirely sure.
As for getting them to eat frozen check out this thread.

Feeding video. The first minute and a half I am getting the shrimp so the inpatient can skip to 1:30 mark. At 2:03 you can see him grab one. He took down 3 shrimp so I pulled the rest out to prevent over eating. I guess I was expecting to much for him to ration his food.
That is a baby for sure, pygmies are insanely rare and are not often brightly colored. I would guess that is either Antennarius pictus or Antennarius coccineus.I know this post is really old but is this a baby or a pygmy? I know this was asked by another member but I couldn't find a reply.
This is hands down the whackiest, craziest creature I have ever seen! There is no way something like this originated on this planet. This was whipped up by some alien in a test tube on some far away planet and seeded here millions of years ago!! Actually I'm pretty sure most of the original creatures on this planet ended up here the same way and everything we see today evolved from those first alien creatures! It just happens these guys still look like their original form from all those years ago. Haha.
I would definitely do a species tank with these guys. They are amazing!

Thanks for this! Now I can research these types in more detail. Not that I'm anywhere near ready to even think about keeping these guys it's never too early to start doing research. They are remarkable! That is a baby for sure, pygmies are insanely rare and are not often brightly colored. I would guess that is either Antennarius pictus or Antennarius coccineus.
I think you mean one of God's little aliens. They're not of this planet!! Haha. Also @lion king I decided to go ahead and bite the bullet. I purchased the fish just minutes ago, it should arrive next week at the latest! I am very excited to try another one of God's little monsters lol
I had him for 2 weeks now. I have him in a 7 gallon nano tank. I feed his SW ghost shrimp and also breeding SW mollies. According to the LFS, I got him from recommends feeding him at least once a week. So far he is doing very well.Very cute, tell us a bit about him. About the tank he is in, how long have you had him. What is is eating, how much and how often. These are notoriously difficult to care for long term.
