Show off your Mandarin

I love my Mandy but I wish they would swim around more like a fish so I could enjoy their beauty instead of hopping around like a frog and rock creeping all day.
Both are mine are out about 80% of the time.

Pretty much front and center or at least pretty visible to the eye. Only times they are not visible is when I drop pellets behind the rocks

I have a lot of rock work and caves. The pods hide in the dark when fish are active during the day so the Mandy cruises the caves in the dark. I hear his snapping sound all day long in there.

This is Pickle only in the tank 2 days and super tiny (3/4in) but is a pod munching machine!

Mandy and dottyback. I guess opposites do attract.

Here is my little guy. Got him to help out with a amphipod problem in my 50g, I'm not seeing them like roaches anymore so he's doing something. I'm trying to wean him to frozen then pellets. It's a mixed bag so far on frozen, but he's getting interested in brine... I had a previous wild caught Mandy that ate frozen and small pellets without help, I'm hoping this round works out.

Anyone having trouble getting Mandy to eat I recommend trying this stuff. Another reefer told me about it.

I just got this blue male Saturday. He came like this but he’s actively hunting and eating so he should fill out soon. I was pretty hesitant about posting him because of this but he’s dinning on fresh bbs and copepods.

I’ve only had him a week but does it look like he’s putting more weight on?

In the second picture it kinda looks like you can see the line from malnutrition but in the last one he looks more fleshed out.

If it's actively looking for pods it's probably not all that bad

He’s constantly eating and hunting since I got him. His attitude has made improvements from when I got him because before he wasn’t even moving around much or showing off (expanding his fins). Probably stressed from being being moved. That’s really all I can say that I’ve noticed. He picks every few inches and travels along the column too. Clownfish keeps following him when he goes up the column to eat. I haven’t seen him charge or attack but the clownfish isn’t very happy to have a new friend. He’s a bit on a hunger strike since the mandarin came.

The fish that started my salt obsession 30 years ago. I have always had one, the longest being 10 years. My current pair is going on 5 years.

Bout the only time I see my mated pair is at night when sleeping, and just before the lights go out when they are doing the mating dance. I mean if I sit and stare for 10 minutes, I'll see them cruising the rocks, but they are certainly not open swimmers and pretty much stick to the rock structure. Not a fish you will see very often.

Wild male, biota female. Both eat nothing but pods, maybe once in a while they may pick up the occasional TDO pellet, or stray frozen mysis, but pretty much have reverted to pods only.

EDIT:
Forgot a pic. One I took last year of them sleeping together:

Mandarins are some of my favorite fish

I tried it with 3 blue in the past and they all died because they didn't eat.

I then got a target mandarin who quickly ate pellets but it died when my tank crashed

Finally over a year ago I got a pair of biota mandarins for $85 and gave it a try. They have survived, grown and gotten some gorgeous colors

Let's see your mandarins, green, blue, red, wild or captive bred!

Did yours start off pale? The orange on my baby ora mandarin is more of a washed out orange. Is this normal for baby tank raised mandarins?

The picture of them in the cup is when they arrived like 1 hour after they got to the store I picked them up. Mine never got pale pale, but I have seen very pale one's when I've gone to stores. Mine were eating primarily TDO from Biota so idk if that makes a difference to the color they arrive with
