So yesterday my fiance noticed one of our sexy shrimp wasn't in his usual place (perched next to one of the RBTAs) in our 70 gallon. This tank is slowly being built out, and the most recent addition were two sexy shrimp (to go along with one other, as well as a couple cleaner shrimp).

Sure enough, a check of the filter sock revealed the little fellow had taken the 'Agustustus Gloop' ride. (Willa Wonka reference). But he seemed fine, so I picked him out and placed him next to his favorite RBTA where he immediately began shaking his money maker.

For about five seconds....
That's how long it took for one of the cleaner shrimp to swoop in, grab the little guy and dart into a crevice between two rocks and immediately begin pulling him apart and devouring him! My fiance was shouting for me to save him, but he was wedged into a space too small for my hand to reach. It was all over in less than a minute. A couple tiny brown legs floated by...fiance poured a large glass of wine...and then another. Mortified.

Not sure what sparked the attack. The other sexy shrimp has lived a peaceful life with the two cleaner shrimp for over a year. I did notice one of the cleaner shrimp is now loaded with eggs. Not sure if that was the shrimp that attacked, but perhaps that's the connection.

Just an unexpected happening I thought I'd share.

Cleaner Shrimp will eat shrimp smaller than it. Sometimes Cleaners won't take down smaller shrimp, but from what I've heard. Cleaner Shrimp will eat shrimp smaller than it.

Like most animals.

cleaner shrimp are just mean! your post made me giggle though, you have a way with words! :D

Agree with above. I had a bonded pair of skunk cleaners for 4 years. When one of them died I thought it would be nice to get him a friend. He enjoyed 3 "friends" as meals before I stopped getting more.

I do have a new bonded pair of cleaners along with a bonded/breeding pair of sexy shrimp now, and yes I sometimes worry about my cleaners finding my sexy's home cave sometimes.

Check out this link of what my cleaners did. There predators. They shouldnt be called reef safe

My cleaner killed my pedersons and I was worried about the wrasse... They don't take well to new shrimp being added to their territory. If it was there before or at the same time ok. After they are estabkished is no good.

Small Print: Dingbat didn't actually kill Big Bertha. She died of natural causes and he just had a tasty meal.
