My friends are pressuring me to get a pistol shrimp, and it sounds kinda cool. I was planning on a trip to the LFS this weekend anyway. These would be the first inhabitants other than CUC to my first reef tank (10g). just thought it sounded cool. I was only going to get one if the store had them in stock. Also, @Tiki Corals I'm planning to head to you guys for this one.

Thanks in advance for the responses.

o yea one more thing, what are some good shrimp gobies? i was thinking yasha gobies, but idk. Also do u need a goby 2 keep a shrimp?

Shrimp will be fine on their own without a goby. IMO 10 gallons is too small for a fully grown watchman goby, but there are plenty of gobies like the Clown Goby that will do great in a nano, however not every goby will pair with a shrimp. My baby watchman goby is barely an inch so if you want to go for a pistol goby combo I'd recommend getting a small goby.

A 10-gallon is plenty of space for an antenna goby or yasha haze goby, both of which will pair up nicely with a candycane pistol shrimp. You can keep just the shrimp, but you'll see it a lot less, and will miss out on the cool symbiosis.

The goby/shrimp pair is great in general I think, tank size aside. As long as you have a decent sand bed and your rock work is stable (they will dig around and cause a landslide otherwise). Ours in a 55:

I wouldn't recommend a tiger pistol in a 10g (they cover A LOT of ground surprisingly. At least half of my 125gallon was dunes from mine.), but a candy cane would be perfect.

Like tired said, smaller shrimp gobies would do fine with one.
