I was wondering what the temperament of the Japanese swallowtail angel fish is because i got one yesterday and didn't read anything thing on them being super shy and i never had one before so i was wondering what exactly normal behavior is for these fish. She is currently hiding and doesn't want to come out to eat yet either.

Awesome fish, my favorite in my tank. Had mine for...IDK 4 years or so. Swims out in the open quite a bit, but she's also pretty quick to dart for the rocks.

Probably just new and getting use to things.

Hello,

I have three of them in my aquarium and they are very outgoing and active. They did hide for the first couple days but are now model citizens always the first to greet me.

I'm just a little miffed that I waited soo many years to add some to my setups as they are a fantastic addition.

Thy are deemed reef safe. In your experience, are they? Just know that angels can sometimes be hit or miss.

Ok thank you i was worried because alot of fish dont seem to be so shy for me

They are completely reef safe any angelfish from the genicanthus species are all planktivores so they are water collum feeders feeding on plankton and tiny pieces of food that float by so they will not see coral as a food option.

Mine swims in open water all day long and isn't bothered by any of my fish. Initial aim was to have a trio, ideally a male and 2 females. Unfortunately one was lost on arrival abd then 2 cohabitated for some time till I found a third and added it. That one from all the genicanthus in my tank was the only one to nip and it only nipped on a euphilia, casual nipper so it took a while for me.to catch it in the act. All the people I spoke to shared by them being model citizens. Since then I added 3-4 small females and my 2 would rip them.appart if I didn't remove them quick, even with intro box, mirrors,.....
One was partially turning male and the other was a female but the subpage never completed the transition till one day when the female started transitioning and the submale nearly shredded it. I took it out as soon as I could net it as it wouldn't go in the trap. Since then I'm.not able to find any here. Plan is to either try 2 small females or find 3 females or 2 females and one final male and add to the tank.
I also had many genicanthus ship bad, have swim bladder issues and popeye... so not the best shipper. Yet amazing fish..

Thanks for the advice my Japanese Swallowtail Angel is finally swimming all over the place today after three days of hiding in a cave she is acting normal and im so happy to finally see the angel happy and swimming around. Im also glad that she has been at least eating the three days she was hiding because she would stick her head out and eat the pieces of food that would drift by and dart back in.
