So we had power out here for about 90 minutes so I decided it was a good time to test out the generator. I have a Champion 3500 watt generator (non-inverter). I was able to run my Eheim AC return pump fine, and the air and filter pumps on my QT tank, but I couldn’t get the sicce pump on my protein skimmer to work. It would just vibrate but wouldn’t turn apparently. I know that some pumps need a pure sine wave, but I figured an AC skimmer pump would work fine. Is this something that’s just an issue with Sicce pumps or would I have this experience with all skimmers?
Debating if I should get a different skimmer or buy an inverter generator. In longer outages I’m really only interested in my return pump, skimmer (mainly for aeration) and tunze 6095 working, so since I’m not worried about sensitive stuff like my lights working I wasn’t going to bother with an inverter generator, and I like the extra power from the 3500 watt generator for my fridge, portable AC and all that , but if I can’t even run my skimmer I may reconsider.
