Hello I’m very new to saltwater tanks. I actually got into it after rescuing a hermit crab that someone brought home from Atlanta. After doing some research I found out that it was a marine hermit crab. So I started a saltwater tank. Finally my levels seem fine after cycling the tank. My sand is turning black tho.
I went to the pet store looking for some kind of cleaning crew and they happened to have 2 dying clownfish for adoption. they seem to be in a tank with sick fish. The fish were so stressed out and I could see they were having a hard time breathing. So gave them a fresh water dip for 5 mins and they seem better the next morning. One was almost see through and it looked so much better. Now that one today appear to have a swollen gill, I can see inside and it looks red. Not sure what happened overnight but I also notice that it was bumping into everything and going to places that it never been before in the tank. Then started loosing color again. The other clownfish was going underneath it, like it was trying to help her get to the surface. Can anyone help? FYI upgrading my tank this weekend.

Red gills can be a couple of things. It could be suffering from an ammonia burn to its gills from shipping or poor water quality. That could also explain the loss of color, not enough O2 being absorbed by its gills. Treat the fish with a bath in methylene blue in a QT. Do you have a powerhead in the tank aimed up toward the surface where it is actively rippling the water surface? This greatly helps adding O2 into the tank water, much better than an airstone.

Thank you so much!!! I actually gave it a 5 min bath in fresh water. It got some color back and it seems like is going back to normal. I’ll definitely get a power head today. I’ll try your suggestion about the methylene blue. Thanks again. M.

You are welcome. Best of luck with your fish. Here's more info that can help:
