Hi everyone. I have scoured the threads and I can't seem to find which possible issue my clownfish has. This is the 2nd clownfish that's gotten sick in the tank, the first one died about 3 -4 weeks ago. Pictures posted below and more details in the following paragraphs. Out of abundance of caution after last death, I setup a 10g QT tank, using the Copper Power with 2.0ppm solution to be sure the fish don't go into shock. Assuming this is the right course of treatment, I'll move up to 2.5ppm therapeutic level over the next few days.

History: The display tank is 40g Aquatop Recife AIO. The tank has been established and cycled for 4-5 months. The original clownfish pair (which are now back in the 40g) were moved to another Aquatop 24g AIO that's in my office, and they were replaced with another pair from LFS (Dallas North Aquarium). Both pair were designer Ocellaris and purchased as pairs. About 1 month ago, female in the 40g displayed symptoms of hiding in the rocks, somewhat lethargic but was still eating. After a few days, I noticed a spot on the nose and made the 1.5 hour drive to LFS to figure out what to do. Too little too late, unfortunately. I setup the QT, did a freshwater bath with RODI and then into the QT with 2.5 ppm Copper Power (blue). The fish died later that evening.

After this, and unsure what was going on, I treated the display tank with Ruby Reef Rally per the instructions. Everything in tank has been fine, minus 3 snails that died. Corals and anemone are all doing well, along with the remaining living clown (was never removed from DT, never showed signs of infection).

2 weeks ago, my significant other wanted to bring the original pair back home from my office. We decided to take the lone clown to the smaller tank and bring the other pair home. Fast forward to yesterday, the larger clown (picture below) was hiding in the rocks and not really moving around much. Looking at the fish for a few minutes I could tell it looked like it was struggling to breathe. I quickly setup the 10g QT, brought up salinity and temp to match display tank. I decided to take both clowns to the QT in fear they would both get sick. That was last night. This AM they are both still alive, but the bigger one (pictured below) still having issues. The only action I've taken is the 2.0ppm CopperPower (blue) QT tank. I have an airstone and a cheap HOB filter (no media) to keep aeration in the tank.

I was concerned the RODI freshwater dip (on the previous sick fish) coupled with whatever the issue was (guessing flukes) caused enough stress it couldn't get healthy. I have PraziPro available and am headed to AquaShella this afternoon in Dallas to see if I can figure out what's going on.

If anyone has ideas, please let me know. I'm new to this, have been out of the hobby 20 years and this is a little disheartening. I don't want any more pets to suffer!

Thank you,
Scott

Forgot to add tank parameters:

ph 8.01
ammonia 0 ppm
nitrite 0 ppm
nitrate 5 ppm
salinity 1.025
temp 78

I run matrix carbon and purigen in the AIO chambers along with biomedia and a sponge for filtration. The included (cheap) skimmer also running 24/7. Media and skimmer were removed during Ruby treatment in DT.

Vid won’t play on my end - could you try to link it as a YouTube video?
Over the gill on the clown, is that a smudge on the glass or is that attached to the clown?
The anal fin looks a little chewed - it’s possible there is aggression between the clowns.

Welcome to Reef2Reef!

The previous fish loss may not be related to the current issue. The female is breathing hard, but the male seems o.k. still. At first, I was thinking Velvet, but then she turned and I could see the lesion on its side. That could be Brooklynella. The trouble is, copper (at 2.5 ppm) works for Velvet, but not Brooklynella.

What is the ammonia level of the water in the tank (and what test kit are you using)?
What copper test kit are you using?

Jay

Link to YT video:

Copper test kit is Hannah Copper HR checker
DT numbers are a API test kit (saltwater master) plus pH & temp from apex probe

I can raise the copper to 2.5ppm, but wasn't sure which method should be used (prazipro, copper, h2o2, etc).

Formalin is best from Brooklynella, but it is so difficult to get. Ruby Reef Rally Pro is a distant second choice.

Since we still aren;t sure as to the organism involved, what about giving both clowns a 5 minute FW dip and then increasing the copper? The FW will give temporary relief for velvet or Brooklynella.

Jay

I will give that a try, thank you!! Hopefully I can try and find some Formalin (but i'm not holding my breath).

Thanks! Great community :)

Update:

Formalin was no where to be found in the Dallas/Fort Worth area this weekend.

Freshwater dip was setup, matching pH and temp of the QT tank. Performed a 4 minute freshwater dip with air stone. You could visually see stuff flaking off while she was swimming around (pic attached). IMG_5369 2.jpeg

She went back into the QT tank (with Copper Power at 2.5ppm) and seemed to be doing better. IMG_5366 2.jpeg

YT Video link:

Woke up this morning (Monday) and she was dead in QT tank. The other clown still appears healthy in the QT.

I would like to try and understand what's happened here. I've attached some pics, but they are not the best. IMG_5378.jpeg

Sorry to hear. Definitely looks like the gill had a bad bacterial infection, and if brook was present it only worsened the problem.
