Sick lavendar tang

I can set up a hospital tank. Have to check the size. Will I have to sacrafice live rock to this? can drop in some rubble. don't want him going through a cycle.

Not sure how to do all the items you listed, but google is my friend. Will report back. I have metroplex and canaplex in the house, not sure about furan 2 but can check.

I would not use live rock, you want the hospital tank as sterile as possible.

I would read through the links posted in the “All things QT” section. You can use biospira or Dr. Tim’s to seed a sponge for a cheap HOB filter, and also waterchanges (which will be needed for the meds anyway) will help keep ammonia minimal.

The antiseptic bath is done in a separate container (I use a 5g bucket) and should be temp-controlled and aerated before and during.

The freshwater dip looks worse than it is.... but, with the very poor condition the tang is in... there is a real chance he won’t make it out. But, if that’s the case he likely wouldn’t have recovered anyway. It’s usually extensive gill damage that’s the culprit.

I unfortunately cant get everything locally. Have metro and kanaplex but not furan 2. Will order. I have general cure as well. Dont have a antiseptic.

Thinking back he has been eating but isnt growing like the rest of them. I probably should have picked up o this. QT is set up, going to use a few rocks from the tank for filtration + a filter.

When I get furan 2 tomorrow, if he is alive should I add it? Any suggestions on getting him to eat?

+1 on this ^^^.

He survived the dip, is now in QT with a sponge filter. Seems to be breathing easier. Will check out the all things QT section.

Is the etiquette to post updates or to be respectful of the fact that you are probably reading 100s of these?

Update us if you can, it helps everyone learn and it’s nice to hear success stories :)

Will do but I'm not sure this will end well. He is looking better in qt, but it's still not good at all.

Question: now that one fish had flukes (based on what fell off in fresh water) do I need to treat all of them?

Yes, Prazipro is generally reef-safe with some precautions. You’ll need to keep your skimmer running without the cup, and maybe add an air stone for good measure. Any ornamental worms might not survive treatment, and if you have a large bristle worm population the die-off can be problematic.

As with anytime you are dosing your DT with any medication, have a large amount of saltwater mixed on stand-by with a bag of carbon or poly-filter, in case of negative reactions.

I would treat the tang in QT also, as well as start an antibiotic against the secondary infections he’s developed.

Unfortunately the tang didnt make it. A summary of lessons learned (someone please.correvt me if this is wrong)

1) keep a seeded sponge filter on hand
2) if the fish is eating and getting thinner dont assume he is ok
3) freshwater dip to check for parasites. Look at what falls off to determine what he has
4) follow with antiseptic dip
5) if parasites, treat with general cure
6) if in main tank - praziquel

Sound right?

@ngoodermuth, thank you for your advice to date. I did a bunch of reading, but have more questions. I'm about to dose my second round of prazi in my dt. I had some ich show up. Havent had an outbreak in this tank, but I mus t have introduced ed it somehow.
1) prazi + (food laced with metro and focus). Is it ok?
2) how long before I turn my skimmer on after the second dose of prazi?
3) is it true that ich inbreeding causes extinction in 10 - 12 months? Would love to get rid of it, but cant go fallow

1) yes, it’s ok to do both
2) I would keep the skimmer ON, just remove the collection cup and turn it all the way down. The time I’d treated in tank, I wasn’t able to replace the cup until after a water change (wait at least 48 hours) I’d just leave the cup off until it stops going crazy...
3) Ich can live and reproduce for up to 4 years if fish are present, if you never introduce another strain- meaning everything wet added to the tank from now on should go through QT to ensure no new parasites are introduced. If new strains are introduced to refresh the gene pool, it can live in your tank indefinitely.

Maintaining a QT protocol will also help ensure nothing WORSE, like brook or velvet, makes it to the tank.

Thanks. I am building out a new QT setup which should help, but QT for corals and inverts will be a challenge. I'm going to have to spend time looking into minimizing risk visa vie corals and inverts because I cant QT for adequate time.
