Hi all, unfortunately my Banggai Cardinal is looking bad. I have had 3 in my 210 for some time, and the pair seems to be breeding on and off. All three have been gaining weight and lookling good. All of a sudden one of the three has been basically floating around, buffeted by the flow....

Video of the incident. No swollen belly or nipped fins, no weight loss I can see, good coloration. Occasional heavy use of gills. All other fish in tank doing great. I fear that when I get home from work he will be dead :(

No idea what causes this but I am sorry when I have had this in freshwater it’s on it’s way out. Could be age.
Yeah I hear ya, clearly up to no good :(
And so often in this hobby, by the time fish get to the point where they show obvious symptoms it is too late even when you can find out what is wrong. I guess I was just hoping to know *why* since knowing would make it easier? I hate losing fishies. In terms of age... I think these banggai would only be a few years old and certainly did not attain the maximum size I have seen many 5-10 year old banggai achieve

Here's a thread with "last ditch" methods to try to save very sick fish. Best of luck!

Awesome thanks.

I'm thinking pulling the fish out may be more stressful than leavign him in? If so I can still drop the temp, kill the lights, and although I don't have pure O2 I have an extra powerhead I can place near the surface to increase gas exchange. If it is still alive when I get home I'll do all 3.

Still no idea what this is though :/

This is so strange. I have had a bangaii do the same thing. Mine actually acted like this on and off for a few months before dying. One day happy and swimming and eating and then the next just like yours. Then back to normal. Hope you find an answer and I would be curious as well as what would cause something like this.

Thanks for sharing! Sorry about your fish

I would put him in an acclimation box so he stops getting blown around and hope for the best.

/No signs of aggression from the pair?
So this, I believe, was the male of the pair. Will see if the 3rd banggai starts to show mating signs with the larger female

Unfortunately the fish was deceased when I got home. Maybe 3-4 hours from seeing the behavior and videoing it, to running over to work for a bit... fish was already on the bottom when I got home :(

Fish are like us. They have strokes, heart attacks, organ failures.

I have two cardinal banggai, both of which I got from the same store (petco). They looked healthy and swimming fine in the store. All my levels in my tank are normal and where they should be as I have other fish and they are all doing just fine. Both my banggai however don’t look good. One is laying on the sand under a rock, through monitoring he has moved a few times but still on the sand laying. The other banggai was doing the exact same floating thing like in the video. I’m really nervous because this is my first time having a saltwater tank and I really don’t want them to be dead. Was there ever a reasoning for them acting like this? I figured it was them sleeping but I guess I’ll find out in the morning if they aren’t swimming like they normally were.
