Been lurking the forums for a bit, and decided to join recently. I’ve been out of the hobby for 4 or 5 years, and recently wanted to get back in. I’ve had larger tanks in the past....90g FOWLR, a 58g Oceanic with softies and LPS, and a 29g Biocube with softies. This time I wanted to do a SPS Nano, or I guess technically, a Pico.

Where I have the tank is in my “Cave”. It’s a room I built in half of my garage. It’s where I mix and record music....guitars, some drums, vocals, etc., so I need the setup to be as quiet as possible. Condenser microphones pick up EVERYTHING. So I decided to make an enclosed tank, sump, light type of system.

The tank is a 5.5g that was originally an above tank refugium for my 58 Oceanic. It was drilled with an overflow to drain into the 58g. For lighting, Im going with the Kessil a80 mounted to the canopy 5” above the surface of the water. Sump is another 5.5g. My plan originally was to baffle an old wet/dry sump, but it’s easier for me to just baffle another glass 5.5. I’m not doing a skimmer. I will be putting cheato in the middle section shortly after the cycle is finished. I went with CariSea Life Rock and dry sand. I do not want any hitchhikers at all in this system. If I don’t put it in, it doesn’t belong. We’ll see how that goes, lol. One chunk of the Life Rock got broken up and siliconed to one of the side walls and some of the back wall.

The tank is still cycling, but it’s getting close.

Hoping to get something in this soon, like at least a cuc. Water and rock is boring....lol.

Here’s a short video from when i got it up and running. Since then I’ve baffled the sump, remedied the gurgling drain and tidied up some of the wiring.

Nice setup! Love all that for a Nano. Welcome to R2R!

Thanks guys!

I think I finally came up with a scape I’m happy with, and I added a few blue legs today. One decided to scale the rock wall.

Looking good.. Probably want to put some kind of screen over that overflow or your blue legs and other critters will end up in your sump or clogging your down flow pipe...

I’d fly you here just to build that setup. That’s beautiful man

@Retro Reefer , yeah I watched him while he was up there. I do have this piece I DIY’d, couldn’t find my strainer.

Wished I planned my 5 gallon tank like you i just threw mine together but its been going pretty good it's probably been up for a good 8-9 months

They are doing great, very good polyp extension and im using led black boxes

Good to hear. I know keeping SPS thriving in this small of a tank is going to be a challenge, at least until I get all the parameters stable. Going to work on a DIY ATO this week, and a thermostat controlled fan and heater. I’m running a tad warm at 80*- 81*. I’d like it stay a couple degrees cooler.

Yes an ato is very important for nanos i just recently got one and im so happy i did, I usually keep my tank at 75-77* degrees
