I use caribsea substrate medium grade (sand and rubble mix). Not fine sand and not coral but in between. I started my tank in November and I forgot exactly what I used but I know it was caribsea live sand.

Originally I sifted the sand every week. I went through some cyano issues but I added an mp10 and that is definitely doing the trick. The top layer of my substrate does not have any algea and there is always little pieces of waste floating and suspended in the water - skimmer removes. Since adding the mp10 I have not sifted the sand ( it's been about 2 months now).

Everything has been fine and the flow seems to be managing to lift the debris. I also have a big influx of tiny snails popping up. I assume leaving the sand along has spurned that growth.

My question is - am I right not to sift? Or am I heading for an algae bloom even with the heavy flow I have?

(Sorry about the book here, but I can't seem to get a definite answer to this or good arguments for or against).
