Is this just a myth? Running a leak test and the sound of gurgling and the hum/whine of the return pump are audible from a floor away. I splurged on a Syncra SDC because I was led to believe it was near-silent. It sounds like an old refrigerator on a hot day. Are there really any silent sub-$1000 pumps? This thing is giving me a headache.

Not sure the size pump you need, but I have found Eheim Universal Pumps as the most reliable (4+ years of operation) and extremely quiet (cannot hear any pump noise) return pump I have used.

I've got a COR 15 right now for my return and running a Herbie overflow and I can sometimes hear a little water going through the weir but that's pretty much it.

What's your overflow setup? I hear noise from there, and a lot in the sump from all the bubbles if the low pipe isn't fully submerged and then occasionally some when my gyre would shoot a lot of water at the weir so the tall pipe would get some water down it.

Bean animal overflow. I think the problem may be that I hard-plumbed the pump and the vibration noise is being amplified. I'll be going to tubing shortly.

A truly silent tank is possible, but hard. There will almost always be some trickling sounds and fan/vibration noise. I was able to get my tank down to about 30 dB, which is pretty quiet but certainly not silent. That’s with a basement sump room though.

Just keep in mind that there are two sources of noise from a pump. Direct operating noise and indirect vibration noise. I have found the Sicce pumps to have almost no direct noise but you have to isolate them to avoid indirect.

You could try getting a silicone pad to put under it. I had my COR 15 originally hard plumbed and didn't hear anything, and that was with it touching 2 side walls in the return chamber and running 100%.

Something sounds wrong. I'm sure size has something to do with it, but my 40B uses a Jebao return pump which is sub $100, and I literally cannot hear it.

I run a really quiet tank. Nothing is silent.

I prioritize quiet equipment over other features.
Soft tubing connect pumps and silicone mats underneath.
Herbie (or BranAnimal) overflow
Have used sound proofing in the past. Not necessary with current tank.

I’ve been satisfied with my Varios return pump. I’d buy a red dragon if I needed to but I cannot hear the varios.
