Okay, update: it's that time of year again to replace my RO/DI cartridges. I have the BRS 5 stage unit. Been thinking of upgrading to their pro series by adding two more cartridges and resins, but I'm riding the fence on it. My mix bed resin lasts a great deal of time and actually out lasts my prefilter and carbon blocks. During their use, the resin burns about half way up in six months of use. Tds coming in is around 3 and out is always 0.

The thing that may concern me is silica. I'm concerned that it's bleeding out or through the mix bed. Going pro series may be way over kill.

So the other option would be as assurance would be adding a second mix bed cartridge. This would make it a 6 stage. I'm leaning towards this option.

No I haven't tested my water for silica or silicate, but every year around this time I get some diatoms in my system. I have read that some water treatment plants add silica to the water supply around this time of year to reduce corrosion in pipes and that it can slip past RO/DI units.

Your thoughts and input are appreciated.

Test first react after the test
Don't know if that will help but it's a logical Theory

It is and I would normally go this route, but this condition with diatoms is like clockwork.

I guess the question really is "does silica get through mix bed resins and would adding a second mix bed cartridge catch any that slips through"?

Anything else that could have caused diatoms temperature change possibly or a lower pH running a higher pH could reduce diatoms

My tank has been extremely stable. Temp sets at 78. PH is constant at 7.8.

Have you tested?. :p

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

I actually dose silica so i might be biased here lol.

id send a ati icpto make sure no more dangerous trace elements are getting through.

Old school reefer says there isn't anything bad getting through, at least I don't think so. Tank is doing exceptionally well, except for the seasonal diatoms.

Maybe your tank and ro/di are telling you to get more gorgs lol.

Go big or go home.

I'm a horrible influence ;Hilarious

I know nothing about this. So I was reading about it. There is nothing to indicate it is a seasonal practice. Water systems that use it probably do so year round.
