Silicon repair threat

I sealed a leak in my tank using GE clear 100% silicone 2+. I’m pretty sure this was not what I should’ve used. Question: will the silicone kill my fish; and if yes, can I cover this repair with an aquarium safe silicon?

once it dries I think it will be fine as far as the safety of the fish but I do not think it will hold forever. What size is the tank? You usually cant repair the seams without actually taking apart and re doing the entire tank.

The GE 2+ has the mold inhibitor stuff in it, I've always heard that's a no go. I also would be concerned with the repair actually holding unless like said above, you took the entire tank apart. Silicone does not adhere to dried silicone.

Thanks for responding. The tank is 55gallons. Need repair to last only 3-6 months. Moving in March and will set up new larger tank. Hope we make it. But was most concerned for the fish. Thanks again.

GE II is absolutely a no go for Aquariums even when dry.

@Goldfish DO NOT put any fish in that tank!!!!

You will need to remove every bit of the GE II and clean the glass thoroughly before reapplying new GE I silicone or other aquarium safe Silicone...

Go with these guys feedback. I was not positive on that silicon. Maybe search Craigslist for replacement tank. Or try to get what you put on off, use a safe one in place. Just not clue how long it will hold

GE II is a neutral cure silicone that is generally OK if allowed a lot of time to properly cure (at least a week). The bigger issue is that it is formulated to work better with plastics and it probably won’t stick all that well to glass or to old silicone. If you want you have a better chance of the tank holding, I’d remove all if the internal ‘seal’ and redo it with an acetoxy cure silicone like momentive.
