Hey, r2r!

I've seen some use of silicone cooking mats as vibration dampeners.

I'm thinking about using some to make a barrier between the aquascape and the glass to avoid uneven pressure and such.

I'd like to hear some thoughts and concerns that might avise.

I use them as vibration dampeners for pumps. I see no reason to place them between rock and the tank. Your not going to put enough pressure points setting rocks on the glass to cause any issues unless you throw them in. I think it would create places for detritus to be trapped that can not be cleaned.

Agreed with above, silicone mats/ tubing feet only for Motors or Skimmers in Sumps.

What I do for my display is use "eggcrates" (I think they are officially light diffusers) to lay the rocks on the rocks because I get uneasy resting rocks directly on glass. It provides a bit of a buffer for the rocks to sit on so it doesn't scratch the bottom, and it is a bit more stability as it can handle spiky bottoms. I have it underneath all my permanent rockscape under the sand, and I have seen barebottom tanks with eggcrate as well.
