Silicone on Marineland Tanks

Does anyone know if their issues have been corrected on silicone leaks and panel issues?

If you sell more tanks, you have more failures. I'm unaware that ML have more failures as a percentage of tanks sold than anyone else. I've owned multiple ML tanks and have yet to have any issue. Use a competent stand and ensure that your floor does not deflect and you are 99% of the way there.

Their DD tanks seemed to have a higher than average failure rate. No idea if it's been addressed.

If they are used tanks in use for a while failure rate should be low if none. The owner before you has proven the tank.unless it does leak and the owner is unscrupulous owner trying to dump it because it has a leak Reefers would never do that to each other though I hope.

Unless ML were to release failure rates it’s all uninformed speculation (something the internet is VERY good at). Also remember ‘publicly unhappy, privately happy’ - with the popularity of social media no limit to the ways that people can express their disappointment. I wouldn’t personally avoid buying a DD tank based on a few reports of failure, but if you’re nervous about it then don’t. That ML continues to sell them means it’s a profitable line - so there cannot be that many failures.

You are correct , but I do find on forums many happy people who likes their tanks or manufacturers. Aquarium hobby is usually a lot of valid, honest people

It has nothing to do with honesty. It’s just part of the human condition the people tend to be more vocal with dissatisfaction than praise. I know I’m more likely to post a poor review of something I’m unhappy with than praise something I’m happy with. Not dishonest .... just reality.

Agreed, I work in an industry where surveys are all that matter. I practically go to peoples houses and clean their toilets for a good survey. They never reply, don’t call someone back within 30seconds of them leaving a message and bam, bad survey shows up.

Also, not sure Manufacturer’s releasing failure rates would matter. How may people have a failed tank out of warranty that never report it.

So, I'll give the info I know about this topic. And I'll start by saying I work in distribution and sell ML tanks. I have never had an issue with ML tanks, not a single one. At least not one that any of my customers (store owners) have said anything about.

Failure rates, the last time we were updated on them (i think was mid 2017) were just over 1%. The bulk of that being STANDARD 220's which had a failure rate of just over 2%, the highest of all tanks.

If you are looking at a ML tank, get a ML stand, then call their customer support if the tank is not level where you want it in the house. Get them to send an email with instructions on what to do.

Read the ML warranty info before purchase. They can be sticklers for little things that get them out of paying.

I've owned many Marineland tank's over the years, never any issues. Current tank is a RR 125 on a hand built stand and canopy.

I had to have a brand new 180 warrantied through ML because of the silicone. The head lady in charge of this dept. told me they switched to a new tank builder, had some problems, and switched back. She said any tank made after early 2016 is the better builder.

Under the plastic rim around the top, you'd see a sticker if you're looking on the inside, top rim on the glass. It's usually under the plastic trim, but faces inwards so you can read it through the glass on the inside. It tells you the manufacture date.

You will rarely find a perfect tank and the black silicone makes it impossible to see air bubbles.

It would also ease people to know rates are not that high.

I guess I really don't understand why Marineland or Aqueon don't try and make a better bracing , use better silicone or even offer a premium line. So people are not forced between custom tank and lesser stock quality

Do the deep dimensions tanks still have issues?

Why doesn't Marineland make a premium quality tank with glass bracing, just produce them in small batches, they would attract a lot of hobbyists

It’s stunningly simple - people like and want cheap. Just look at Jebao if you doubt that. ML is in the mass-market business.

Agreed but there are small ways to make improvements that wouldn't drive there cost too high. Similar to glass bracing like Oceanic had on their tanks.
