Silly Question for a young tank

What would a responsible reefer do?

  • Only buy a few (5 or so but less than 10) mixed frags

  • Since the water parameters have been good to v good in last 3 months I would buy 10-20

Yesterday I was watching @jfox 8th Anniversary Sale and I thought that was an amazing opportunity to stock up a tank with frags. But, everything I read here says slow and steady wins the race. So in an example:

I have a young tank 6 months old 40-60 gallons. I followed @Bulk Reef Supply setup where he allowed rock to cure in a trash can for ~3 months (I believe that was the time). Got the tank wet and added some fish (not a huge fish load, but a good mix following proper husbandry advice). 3 months later this sale goes up.

Let’s assume that I have the correct PAR, Fuge, Skimmer (perhaps), and very good water parameters with no issues.

Would it be poor judgement to buy 30 frags all mixed in one shot? Zoas, Softies, LPS, SPS?
My initial thought was if I had a new tank this would be great to buy some “high end” Zoas. Perhaps buy 10 in one shot, but greed and the desire to purchase frags at a huge discount is very Stong.

What does the community suggest?

Can you buy and add 30 frags all at once.....yes. Can you do it in a young tank.......probably not lol. I never had much luck with SPS until the tank was more mature but I am sure others might disagree. Adding Zoas, softies, and LPS would probably be fine though mixed in with some easier to keep SPS.

My suggestion is to buy a couple frags from a LFS, or better yet another hobbyist to test out your tank and husbandry skills. Get those growing, let the tank build up some coraline algae (good indicator tank is ready for coral) first, then buy a bulk order.

Well before my tank was full I used to buy 15-20 frags often, but you need to make sure all your water parameters are stable, and you then may need to monitor and adjust them to take into account all the new corals as elements start to be used up. So be ready to dose as required if your not already.

I prefer to add just a few at a time, and be selective as I think you enjoy it more, but when I started I just wanted to fill the beast so understand exactly what your saying

My thoughts exactly. Also, when purchasing softies, you have to consider real-estate. Zoas, palys, star and clove polyps and mushrooms (among others) can spread quickly. I would test the waters with fewer more forgiving corals first and keep in mind what you think your long term goals for the tank might be.

These sales will come up often enough. I'd wait until your tank is stable (1+ year) before investing hundreds in corals. You can read my buod threads for evidence as to why.

Start slow. Like others have said. Get some cheaper easier frags from your LFS. Give them a month or two and see how they do. 30 frags in a young system is a lot. I would suggest doing that until a year or so.

Putting aside my envy that you can afford to buy 30 Jason Fox frags it would be a bad idea. As others have mentioned you have to keep your long term goals in mind. Corals can grow fast, or slow, depending on what they are and rapidly take up a lot of room. So when you put a frag in your tank consider how much room it could take up if it is successfully grow in your tank. That little frag could quickly be 10 or 20 times the size it is when you bought it in a tear or two.

Go slow. Add a few at a time.

I've never had good luck adding a bunch at one time. Think the most I ever did at once was from a wild night on ebay..(auctions ended same time as superbowl halftime show and I won about 15 frags at the opening bid. ) but I have a mature tank and it all worked out. Sps is tough in a new tank. You could definilty get a bunch of zoas or shrooms. Even a few LPS. But definitly take your time, see what does well before you have 10 frags dying in one shot

I would really like to thank everyone who took the time out to confirm what I kinda knew/thought (although I may not like the advice heheh).

I kinda knew that it would be foolish to buy 30 frags at once. It's something a responsible reefer wouldn't do. But that little voice in my head said... "perhaps if you cure the system properly and show restraint, in the beginning, your system might be able to do it"

@rocsec1 I assure you I couldn't afford 30 of his frags normally. But he really had some amazing deals, a bunch was on sale for $5 and there were a TON in the $30 range.

Well here's to waiting for his 9th Aniversary Sale :) (Let's hope I have a tank by then I'll be in the position to buy 3 or so)
