Simon's 450

For those amused by mad scientist fish rooms: exhibit A. Not quite as mad as it was with the 400 attached but still over the top. I do 'over the top' better than most. Still a rat's nest of wires and tubes. In the Spring I really need to get rid of the stuff that is no longer used.

Your cable management is on par with my own well done hahaha. That mad science fish room fills me with envy

Hmmn, noticed this a few weeks ago …..

May have been there for a while, and I just did not notice before. Going to need to keep an eye on it ...
Oh wow. I came to your thread just now because I was considering a custom build from FishTanksDirect. Not a good sign on that seam. I'm replacing a 365 gallon with a failing seam - would hate to have another one.

Builder claimed he’d ‘never seen this happen before’ ….. Caveat emptor. In all other respects I was very happy with the tank. Seam problem did not progress further than that picture. I no longer have the tank so cannot speak to it now.

Was a bit odd. Based on how pressure would presumably manifest, I’d have thought any seam problems would begin on the inside edge. @albano bought a tank from them at around the same time, though if memory served had them do eurobracing on the seams?

Interestingly, the small softie tank has partly rejuvinated my interest in the hobby. No tangst with softies LOL ….. I think one could grow them successfully in a commode. I’ve a portable home installed electric shock treatment device should ‘rejuvenation’ begin to muse about getting a bigger tank …….

Softy tanks are fun because you dont have to worry about anything. It's so nice. Don't miss sps and lps as much as I thought I would and not much stress.

After almost 7 years of mostly reliable service, my apex A2 head unit has crapped out. Neptune offered me a good replacement $$ for the A3 (laughably, less than most overpricers seem to want to sell used units). I’m dreading the swap over since my apex system has become quite complicated. I think I shall use this as opportunity to dispense with those modules that just don’t really do all that much.

I sure hope Neptune is better at designing and building this stuff than they are at fulfilling orders. Despite paying for overnight last week, it looks like I'll be lucky to get it next week - most disappointing. Although my experience with Neptune has been pretty positive, I have always worried about 'too many eggs in the Apex basket'. Furthering the avian analogies, those concerns have now come 'home to roost'. I am going to significantly reduce my reliance on Apex so that when something like this happens again it will be a minor, rather than major, inconvenience. Look for a bunch of for sale adds on modules LOL.

Folks at Neptune came through for me. Got the replacement on Wednesday. Having the old configuration summary help enormously and I am about 75% of my way through reprogramming the new unit. Much easier this time than when i migrated from the classic to A2pro seven years ago.

I am still going to make sure that I am better prepared for a potential Apex failure in the future.

Mag anemone was looking a tad ragged last week. Finally, it’s going to split. Nope, ate something large. My long tenured leopard wrasse had been losing weight for a few months, almost certainly old age. He died and drifted into the mag. Urp!

Large dusky makes a replacement problematic.

Moving my senselessly inane commentary on all things reefing to here .....

What are you thinking of switching to?

I also have too many eggs in the Neptune basket but unless I’m willing to have multiple controllers from different companies providing redundancy, and not sure how I’d really do that, I don’t see a practical way of spreading out the eggs…

I am not getting rid of my Apex, just trying to reduce my level of reliance. I think this probably means more non Apex backups.
