Hi,
I am getting a 40 breeder frag setup in trade soon and want to set up as a frag tank. Wife thinks it will just be to house the extra corals from my DT that I haven't placed yet, but I have plans...

Setup will initially be 40 breeder, small skimmer, small LED, heater, powerhead. No sump. Manual ATO until I get one.

Initially I will use for the misc. extra corals from DT until I can be sure everything is ok, then plan to use for mushrooms and zoas for now. Eventually want to add sps/lps and anemones, but I know I'll need to have a way to dose. Want to keep it as simple as possible for now,

Questions:
I have a small light - will that work for now? Alternative is an AI sol I have, the only issue is how to figure out what PAR is - it's a pretty bright light.

Anything else I need/should have? I have a yellow tail damsel that is coming out of my DT and I was thinking of adding to the frag tank. Good idea? Figured the coral would grow better with some fish poop fertilizer.

What else should I do/dose/feed? I have reef chili I use for DT - should I use that on frag tank as well? How often?

thanks!

Sumpless should be fine. I am no lighting expert, but I kept all my coral in bins on the floor for 90 days when setting up my DT, it all did fine under a cheap black box light. Personally if you want my opinion. I would keep it fishless so that it is a frag tank but also a coral QT, in order to keep new corals separate from fish for 76 days prior to DT introduction. Just a thought! Good Luck!

I'm using an IM Lagoon 25 with an AI prime as a coral and invert QT/frag tank. No sump. Seems to be working great. I keep it barebottom and with a couple big pieces of dry rock in there to allow shelter for the inverts, LPA and softies, but still allow me to blast a lot of flow at the SPS.
Because of the QT nature of it, I also keep it fish free. Wish I could toss a tang in there to nip at the algae that sometimes comes on some of the SPS because as it stands, there's no real effective control mechanism besides me pulling it off, but that would sort of defeat its purpose.

I just picked up a 20 gallon long tank from petco $1 gallon sale. I am turning that into a frag tank. I am using kessil A80 and jumping it from the display kessil 360we I have on my main tank.
I plan on using a all in one tank sump kit I am picking up at eBay for filter.
No fish, no protein skimmer
I am also trying to figure out how to use the apex dos to remove 2 gallons of water from may main tank and add it to this tank and then remove 2 gallon every night

Interesting, never thought about an AIO system. If no skimmer, what are you going to use it for? I'm sure the DOS can do what you want, I've seen people set it up like that before. Thanks for the tips.

I would add other media( chemipure/ purigen)to the aio, it will have a sock that I can replace, space for a heater and if I do need a skimmer I can always add it later.

I was originally going to build it with just a aquaclear 110 but I can set this up for the same price and I think it’s more reef friendly
