i started everything up and flowing on a new setup last Friday. According to simplicity for the first week of break in they say leave the water level knob pointing to arrow and leave air intake valve open. But the second I even try to open the air valve a 1/16 turn it instantly starts foaming over and looks like this within seconds. And micro bubbles are coming out everywhere on the bottom of skimmer. Is this normal during break in? Should I scoop out all the foam or let it settle? All the things I find and been reading doesn't seem to have the amount of foam that mine is producing.

How long have you had the skimmer running? It took mine about a week to settle down and another week to get the skimmer adjust.

EDIT I should say that I have a different brand of skimmer

4 days. I was wondering if that much foam is normal and if I should leave it or scoop it out. Even if I open the air valve a 1/16 turn I have to sit there and scoop out foam from the sump otherwise it'll overflow out to the floor.

Have you ran any medication in the tank by chance? That seems excessive to me

No I haven't, that's what I thinking. Everything is brand new. I hand washed and rinsed everything outside with just hose water. Then I filled tank with rodi salt water.

were are your phosphates?

Haven't tested it
Just guessing, but you could have a bunch of phosphates in the water and that is causing the excess foam.

I had similar situation I was able to slow the air down by temp. raising the skimmer height until break in started to kick in

I have a simplicity skimmer, make sure water level is between 7-9in and make sure arrow on water adjustment is lined up with arrow cut out. also take air adjustment thumb screw completely off during break in period.

if you do those things and still tons of foam i would lower water volume to right at 7in or slightly lower.

So I'm kinda thinking maybe my sump is getting all foamy cause of my drain hose that came with sump. It's like the one in the picture here. I think I'm gonna hard plumb it. There seems to be a lot of air getting in the drain and could that be making water in sump foamy with all the air getting mix with the water? The intake on the tank is super quiet and smooth. It's after the bulkhead where that drain pipe starts I can tell it gets all bubbly with air in the line.

Up the flow to the sump? Is the water level to high in the chamber with skimmer. I just got a simplicity 240dc and it said 7-9.5 " of water. Also when you put the bubble plate in did you make sure the part with no holes is above the pump outlet?

In the picture it's at 9-1/4". I was playing around with return pump speed and it changes water level, otherwise I've been keeping it at about 7". Cover plate is on like.

Not sure what you mean, up the flow to the sump

Maybe speed the pump up as long as the drains can handle it. I wonder if it's discharging bubbles and getting sucked back in while creating new ones. Also when you scoop out the foam does it go back to water relatively quickly or stay foamy for a while. Would definitely test the water out

My LFS owner told me when I bought my new skimmer to place it in a five gallon bucket with rodi water and vinegar and run at full for several hours and this with basically do the break in period in a few hrs and not weeks.
What did you clean the sump with? Those bubbles almost look like soap suds. Good luck and keep us posted.

So I ended up changing out the flexible intake line the sump came with and hard plumbed it. Its been over an hour now and it sounds and seems so much smootherthen before. No more air in the line causing the intake section to bubble over like before. Which helped the water entering the skimmer section to not be all air bubble water coming in. So now the skimmer is not going completely nuts.
It only took 5 trips to the hardware store to get the right parts to get a 2' long section plumbed. Which was why I was even using that flexible hose. Still can't find a slip union for it though, either out or threaded everywhere in the size I need.
