I have a 120 gallon tank with one of the worst overflow designs. The dreaded single overflow, nothing else in the overflow, I used to have a Maggie Muffler, it kinda of worked so I pulled it, so without it my wife is compliant about he noise, I do not have room for a valve under the tank, I use a pool flex into a sock.
Any ideas that might work? I know it is a long shot.
I am considering going back to filling the overflow with bio balls, the was pretty quiet.

A Maggie muffler or diy stockman is just about as quiet as you can do. Do not put a valve on a single drain system. You could try lowering gph that your return pump delivers

It is either a 1 1/4 or 1 1/2", I do now have a DC pump again

I will play around the DC pump, I do have good flow within the DT.
Is filling the over flow box a bad idea with bio balls? I think it takes about a 5 gallon bucket worth.

This will not be a popular method but it worked for me.. I found this on You Tube and it quieted the noise almost completely. Just stay vigilant with cleaning to prevent clogging. I honestly rarely messed with it on a 100g cylinder tank for two years., no issues no noise.

I wouldn't obstruct the drain pipe. The noise is from too much flow going down the drain sucking air with it.

I would put the muffler back on and turn down the return pump
