Is there a reason people don’t do a double the size single tank for saltwater mixing and just have their daily water changes stop for the time it takes to make and mix a new batch of saltwater? I don’t get why everyone does a saltwater and a freshwater rodi tank.

My RODI has automatic flush so for ATO water I can make it on demand using a much smaller reservoir so no benefit there.

I’m tying to buy my 250-300gallon SW reservoir this week so your input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I keep a 32 gallon brute can of RODI and a 20 gallon brute can of Salt Mix. I have the 20 gallon filled back up after I empty it and mix salt again. I like to have salt mixed and ready to go to be able to do a 25% water change in case of emergency, and tropic Marin Pro reef stores really well too. I also have 32 gallons of RODI 1) to have ready to fill my 20 gallon can, and 2) I use some of it to fill my ATO reservoir, 3) I use RODI to clean test kits after use, rinse equipment off after cleaning in citric acid etc.

I would love to have 2 - 40gallon tanks in the garage for a full on mixing station, but space is limiting that.

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

Do you see any major pitfalls to making larger batches of saltwater at once, so that its available for water changes for a longer time, but not having a freshwater reservoir aside from a small ATO container?

I posted a much more detailed version of this question and someone replied that he uses two containers but uses both for saltwater and he just alternates between the two so he can make more saltwater while his other container is being used for water changes. I see some benefit to not having to rush to mix more saltwater, since he has a long window to make more in tank B while tank A slowly gets depleted.

I think what the other guy was referring to is having 1 container with salt water for automatic water changes where the he is changing small amounts of water throughout the day. And depending on the rate that he’s changing water on a daily basis and how much evaporation he’s getting, he may not have a need to top off his AT

on another note, you can store saltwater but not for extended amounts of time (2+ months for example) BRS did a study where the showed the parameters coming away from what they were on the first day of mixing.... I don’t mind storing the saltwater but with my schedule it would only be in there for at most about 3-4 weeks....
I do think it’s important to have RODI water available for top offs and maintenance duties...

I hope this makes sense.....
