I recently added 3 new fish to a 2 month old system ....the original inhabitants were a lawnmower, a clown tang and a six line wrasse. The lawnmower turned himself into jerky from vaulting out of my tank 8( so I wanted to replace him, and I needed a bit more help with the clean up so I doubled my hermit crabs and snails and picked up a yellow tang and a super cute snowflake clown( my first ornamental fish) . I was a bit worried about the tangs, thinking the clown tang would bully the yellow but decided to go for it anyway, after acclimation and a probably a too short quarantine(2 days)..i put them directly into the tank ...the clown tang took after the lawnmower and is now wearing a big lawnmower bite on both sides of him and has chilled out a little bit ...the tangs seem like they will work out there problems ....the Six line however has decided the snowflake clown is his mortal enemy and is beating the clown into submission anytime he sees him ....causing the clown to seemingly feign death by going motionless on the bottom of he tank for a short period of time. the six line leaves him be when this happens.... I cut the lights off early last night to end the barrage and give the clown a break in hopes things would chill a little. After feeding this morning it started all over again ....with the six line hunting and seemingly attacking the clown usually 3 times in a row before swimming off ...the clown isn't wearing any damage I can see except maybe a nipped dorsal fin... I will be trying to retrieve one of them out of the tank tonight if the war hasn't subsided any when I get home from work. I had no idea six lines could be so vicious. this may just be my noob-ness showing ...but I wasn't expecting the peacefull clown to get much attention from the other fish... is this normal? the clown fish is healthy and eating..... thoughts? comments? I can house one of them in my sump if needed but pulling my pile of rocks to get them will not be fun but id prefer to do that than have the clown die..

sixline in the sump if you want to keep him or take him back...they are mean little devils, he will never get better and will mutalate any newcommers.
also the clown tang is going to get extremely aggressive as well yiou may consider taking him back too. how big is the system?

the system is small and the clown tang is already slated go back to the store when I move. I didn't research him and his size requirements before I got him he was an impulse buy slightly coerced by a LFS. i've had six lines before and didn't have issues...but always added them last in the past... id really like to keep a sixline in the systems. they've always been usefull in the past keeping parasites and other baddies at bay. is there another good more peacefull alternative to sixline wrasses?

try a yellow coris or melanarus, go on liveaquaria.com they have tons of wrasses on there to choose from whether you wanna purchase or not they can give you a good idea of what you want!

I've had 2 sixlines and they were great adds to my tank - always moving around. They both jumped out of my tank - won't get another until I get a cover - but - I bought them small and the last one used to hang out with 2 of my clowns, it was like they were buds... I never saw any aggressive behavior out of either sixline. Good Luck!

all of em in 1 shot

Well with the fish you have now, I still think you should wait until you upgrade before adding another, even if you sump the Six Line. Even at smaller sizes, a 20 long is still too small for those Tangs, so to crowd them with another fish would not be fair IMO.

yeah im not planning on any more fish in this tank ... was more just in shock at how insane the six line reacted to the clown. was not expecting that. I understand keeping tangs in smaller tanks can be a hot issue. I didn't do my research on the Liniatus tang in the first place and I knew better. If I can get one of them out I will.
