What size Brute garbage can should I use for a 40g breeder? Do I need a big 44g can or can I get away with a 20g one? Or is a brute overkill for a tank that small considering I’d be changing 10g a week.

My tank is a 46 gallon and I use the bigger Brute can. If for any reason you need to do a larger water change, you have a big enough can and for the times you forget to turn the water off, your floor will thank you. Lol

There are several nice things related to having a Brute including the fact that you can add heavy duty wheels it you want it to be mobile, you can be comfortable that it is reef safe, and it is easy to drop a circulation pump inside. That said, depending on your situation and layout there are a LOT of options. Whether you head to a local farm store or get a couple of 7 gallon blue water jugs from a local pool store, there are a lot of ways to hold water for your tank.

I’d go with a 32 so you have headspace in the container. I typically make 25G and it fills a 32G Brute to about 6” from the top. So I don’t worry about surface agitation spilling out when I’m mixing salt or dropping a pump in to get water out.

I think the 44 will be to big for you, I'd also go with the 32.

I have the 44 and the 20
