I have my own theories which I will share soon, but just curious to hear other people's opinions. Some people's tanks has the largest polyps and then others have smaller and some medium. Anyone know why this happens?

I think more flow and higher lighting equals smaller polyps.

I don't know. 5 years ago, I had T5 and low flow in a softies tank (55g). Several of my zoa / paly colonies had small polyps. I've since upgraded to a 75g, 250w MH and high flow for sps. My polpys in a few of the same colonies are noticeably larger. Just my experience, I'm not claiming this as hard fact.

I like medium/high lighting. For plump to medium sized palys and zoanthids. Higher light and higher flow cause them to become compact.

I think LED's and Halides cause polyps to be larger because the polyps reach toward the light. With T5's the light kind of surrounds the polyp and therefore causes it to be smaller because it doesnt have to reach for the light.
Also, maybe a shorter amount of time ur lights are on causes them to grow larger but not grow as fast.
Mine too are medium sized and I would like to get them all a nickel size

This looks like it's going to be a good topic! I've heard of the higher flow = larger polyps, but for some reason mine always still have tiny skirts! I love long skirts, but can almost never get them.

IMO polyps are a pyramid scheme ,the older the polyp the bigger it will be regardless of external factors .the offspring will feed the first and so on.I agree with longer skirts in high flow ,It's trying to eat in a hard situation.

Mine are twice the size and shorter curled skirts. Growth I get 2-3 babies a month he gets 5-6. I have Halides and leds, he has halides and t5. But this is really sparking my interest. I will be fragging some nice zoos and giving them to a few people around and see how after a few months everything goes.

Great representation. Im really interested in findin out why this happens. My sunny delights look like the top photo mainly. Mine may be just a little larger. The thing is, when i got my sunny delights 2 years ago from Ian at reefodyssey, they look similar now has the day when i got the. But still a little different. My skirts have become gray instead of brown and are not curled they are all wavy. I have them in 4 different areas in my system and just got a nice frag from cherry corals whuch they gave me instead of the 5 color rainbow by mistake. The ones from cherry look like the ones in the second picture. So im interested to see how they look after 1 month. But there is two people localy who have large zoa and paly polyps. They're polyps all have large stems and after 1 week of putting their polyps in my tank, they shrink down. Same lighting also - ATI powermodule and they even keep their lights on for longer! It makes No sense. Except, i keep my blues on for an extra 3 hours longer than him. He keeps his whites on for 7 hours and i keep them on for 4.5 hours.
