Skeleton after fragging?

I’ve never really thought about this before so I wanted to ask you guys, after you frag either a hammer, torch, or frogspawn what happens to the main skeletal stock of the mother colony where you removed the head? Does a new head sprout out, or will it just be a empty looking patch?
Sorry of this is a stupid question!

Initially it’ll be a blank space but if conditions are good it could split off another head and fill in the space.
