Skim without a lid?

As the title says I noticed my skimmer performs better without the lid on. I have an innovative marine desktop skimmer (midsize). Is it okay to run it like this?

As the title says I noticed my skimmer performs better without the lid on. I have an innovative marine desktop skimmer (midsize). Is it okay to run it like this?

Drill some holes in the lid for more air if you like. I would keep the lid so skim doesnt bubble out or jump out with a bubble pop
